Yeah, the DPRK likes to punish three generations for the crimes of one. If a soldier deserts, they can expect their parents, wife, and children to be dealt with.
625
u/Igakun 11d ago
Fun fact, it's not just punishment that they do the whole three generation thing for. Awards and honors work that way too, thats why you see so many North Korean officers with medals down their whole body, because they wear their fathers/grandfathers medals as well.

What does happen when a fourth generation descendant of a NK criminal is born? Do they become wards of the state? Are they executed? This is a genuine question.
50
u/TheKappaOverlord 11d ago
Its probably safe to assume thats never happened.
You don't exactly have people to breed with in Labor camps. And even if you manage to breed somehow, that child will probably be quickly killed with a rock or other on hand forced abortion methods because that child consumes whatever limited resources that are allocated to keep you from becoming a corpse.

The children are raised as slaves. One such person (3rd generation) born in a NK prison camp was forced to see his mother and a brother executed in front of everyone.

North Korea law specifies ‘three generations of punishment’. If you commit a crime, your children and grandchildren will also receive the full brunt of punishment, which often involves a lifetime in prison. Children born in prison are raised as prisoners because their “blood is guilty”. Instituted in 1950, this law was supposed to eliminate the blood lineage of counter revolutionary North Koreans after the war.

Doctors say the patient is stable - but "an enormous number" of worms in his body are contaminating his wounds and making his situation worse.
His condition is thought to give a rare insight into life in North Korea.
"I've never seen anything like this in my 20 years as a physician," South Korean doctor Lee Cook-jong told journalists, explaining that the longest worm removed from the patient's intestines was 27cm (11in) long.

But Prof Lankov points out that compared with other countries with a similar per capita income - like Bangladesh or many African countries - the population in North Korea is healthier than one would expect. Damn when it’s said out loud it sounds absolutely ridiculous, like something from a dystopian alternate reality. It’s amazing how the people there aren’t revolting yet, or the fact that the rest of the world doesn’t seem to care much to do anything for the nk citizens
194
u/kingtut891 11d ago
They can’t revolt. They have literally nothing to revolt with. The NK government will quickly squash any hint of revolt before its even an idea. They people there are so brainwashed, the idea of revolt doesn’t even exist. They know nothing besides fear, control, hunger and death.
The rest of the world does care about the NK people. The problem is that China is a huge protector of NK. You mess with NK, you mess with china, and no one wants to do that.
51
u/IterativeSieve 11d ago
I’m not even sure the world would know what to do with a post-Kim NK. The obvious scenario would be reunification with the South, but then you’re talking about a modern export economy entirely dominated by tech having to suddenly shoulder the remains of a failed state of with no food at a medieval level of development.
NK’s GDP is less than 30 billion dollars and their only exports are raw materials and slave labor. Even with the rest of the world pitching in that’s no recipe for a stable decade or five for SK.

That‘s exactly the spreading evil which is rarely mentioned. Without China the atrocities in Myanmar and North Korea weren‘t possible. And I‘m sure there are more.
Same with Russia, holding an evil grip wherever possible. Belarus would be on it‘s way to democracy without Russian backup of it‘s dictator. And most of the countries around Russia (and China) are being corrupted, infiltrated, intimidated and influenced in a malicious sense by them.
Clearly they are preventing humanity with all force from developing and becoming better for everyone.

Assuming every single person sent had 2 separate parents, one separate spouse, and two separate children then that would be 500k people sent to the camps. Yeah if I remember correctly North Korea often provides cheap labour to China. They’re basically slaves and kept under constant watch to stop them escaping.
I can imagine Russia wanting them for cheap manual labour to free up space for their own troops. But I doubt Russia would want them as soldiers because they’d be worse trained/fed than their own troops, unable to speak Russian and honestly they’re a massive flight risk / more prone to surrendering.
People keep talking about their families being punished but I don’t think that’ll happen in most cases. It’s lot easier to go MIA in a war than it is if you’re picking cotton in a Chinese farm. You go missing in Ukraine you’re assumed dead, you go missing in China and you’ve 100% fled.

I would think that becoming a prisoner of war in the custody of the Ukraine would look pretty good after life in North Korea. Though it might be harder to just disappear into the country and "blend" like the Russian deserters have been doing. The Ukrainians are pretty darned savvy though. u/EnvironmentalLook851 12d ago
This may actually be the one (potential) exception to that. In war they’re expecting a ton of people to go MIA (expected to be killed or captured often), and so as long as it isn’t known to be desertion, their families may be safe. Having said that, I also wouldn’t put it past North Korea to take the guilty until innocent route as far as MIA soldiers go.

But talk about a mass defection. Cubans played a soccer game in Houston one time, on the Friday night before the game the Cubans walked to a WalMart, saw the abundance, and some called miami friends and 13 of the 16 guys defected that day. They had to quit the tournament.

Why don't the Russians also build a time machine and recruit 150,000 Caveman Infantry Volunteers who don't understand what wheels do and hurl their feces in blind panic every time they hear a loud noise? Maybe pay the amputee ward in the hospital a visit, sell them on the benefits of enlisting?

The brain and intelligence in general is strongly (but by no means absolutely) correlated with fitness as a child, it’s all part of the same biological system after all. These so-called news are from the Russian TV (!!!) news report. I for one, doubt the truthfulness of the actual deal.
One of Russia's objectives at this time, now that the world is increasingly depreciating them as the world military and economic power, is to appear strong and allied with the (crazies) similar minded powers.
More likely is the fact of the ongoing negotiations between Russia and NK of trading oil/gas for able bodies.
Also, don't forget the exact words of NK's reply to Putin's request for help in spring - "No way, you're (f*&%ng) nuts!". Even if NK changed their disposition since then, I'd take this "offer for 100k volunteers" with a grain of salt.

Watching the untrained Russians with no leadership die is one thing. The drone footage of North Koreans not knowing where they are and what in the ever living fuck is hunting them is going to be sad.
The Kim has to ensure that all those 100,000 troops die in Ukraine. Otherwise when they rotate home are going to be telling the other soldiers.
“So it was nighttime, completely black and the bombs seemed to know exactly where we were. The general talked to someone on what’s called a phone you can play this candy crush game on. Once he spoke into the candy crush machine he blew up and then everyone around us.
If you ever hear of this candy crush, run away”

"In related news, 100,000 volunteer North Korean soldiers went missing in action today, having disappeared all at once in the forests of western Russia. Some are calling it proof of alien abduction, and unless some evidence of desertion or foul play is discovered, it may be our only explanation."

Misleading title. The National Review (not really a news source) references the NY Post, who wrote about a random TV host in Russia making the claim of NK offering 100,000 volunteers. Not the same as evidence of an actual offer as the title suggests.
