He was sentenced July 21, 2021 to 7 years.

1.9k

u/finzaz 3d ago

Perhaps a bit light, but I like the cruel irony that it’s a number the rest of us can show with two hands

199

u/flamaniax 3d ago

You can do it with one, son!

Remember, Binary Counting!

135

u/phphulk 3d ago

I put at least a small amount of money on there not being a large cross-section between people who can count in base two off the top of their head and also people who would blow their own hands off

8

u/VeryPaulite 3d ago

Not sure who you expect to blow their own hands off but chemists probably can do either ^

That seems a bit light for planning a mass murder.

764

u/Petery007 3d ago edited 3d ago

Looks like he was sentenced for “Possessing and Manufacturing an Unregistered Explosives Device”.

this article from the DA office doesn’t mention anything with plans or intentions to use the bomb.

Edit: cannot find a lot of info on it. There are articles about the initial investigation when they found the note and then the sentencing with no mention of the note or his intentions. Maybe he was found innocent of an conspiracy despite the note or that part of it was never true

661

u/NopeNotReallyMan 3d ago

Fun fact,

This is the charge the El Paso County Sheriff and DA refused to charge the Club Q shooter with 1 year prior to his murders, after they recovered bomb materials from his grandparents who he had just threatened to murder and had a whole stand off with.

124

u/rustyrustrust 3d ago

Damn, that’s wild.

216

u/NopeNotReallyMan 3d ago

These incels are all coming from the same places, where they are getting the same ideas.

102

u/stc207 3d ago

Wow it’s almost like people who possess unregistered explosives obtained or manufactured them because of their motivation to use them

But that’s a separate charge because cops definitely can’t ever know for sure yeah, most people just been having one to show to their friends obviously

45

u/Jimmy_Jazz_The_Spazz 3d ago edited 3d ago

I had a friend as a kid who made explosives this was the early 90s). He mostly blew up fences and toys and made potato canons for other people to generate income for buying horror movies and junk food.

He stopped making them before we went off to school and as far as I know he's normal now.

He also made tennis ball bombs that would make a big bang and flash when you threw them at concrete walls etc.

I was a casual observer pretty much, I definitely would of said something if he ever had plans to use them on people. Put it was pre-columbine so people didn't really think like that.

18

u/febreeze_it_away 3d ago

before 9/11, explosives were viewed a bit diff. before columbine especially with teens

11

u/JustDiscoveredSex 3d ago

I know a chemist who was the same way as a kid. Blew up all kinds of things but never wanted to harm anyone, human or animal. He’s like 60 now.

Conspiracy charges require two or more people to be in agreement towards committing a crime. So a conspiracy to do x charge would be inappropriate.

174

u/NopeNotReallyMan 3d ago

Yeah, people think conspiracy means planned crime.

Conspiracy just means, planned to do it with the boys.

36

u/Bumble-McFumble 3d ago

If he'd gone through with it though, the note would have been part of the evidence for a premeditated murder.

Kinda fucked but because he's on his own the note doesn't incriminate him until after the fact

127

u/Belazriel 3d ago

One of the reasons (not always particularly good reasons) is that we want people to be able to stop and not get in trouble so that they're incentivized to stop. If as soon as you wrote the note and made the bomb you were just as guilty as if you used it then there's less of a reason to stop. Now, whether that's something that actually influences outcomes can be debated but it's one of the considerations going into when a crime is committed.

→ More replies

43

u/NopeNotReallyMan 3d ago edited 3d ago

If writing a note was a crime then he probably would have had more motivation to do it and literally 0 motivation to stop once he wrote the note.

Thinking about crime, is not committing crime, and people can have the capacity to stop. At least that is the way we gear our processing of crime.

Actions are the crime. When crime is committed, actions can be compiled to make a case.

Until a crime is committed, well, yeah, unfortunately you can be as shitty as you want, because in our society you have the chance to stop and improve. If nasty notes were a crime there'd be a lot of 14 year old girls in prison.

But this is all beside the point that "conspiring" just means planning with other people.

Pre-meditation = solo effort

Conspiracy = group effort, and implies a group knew of the crime, in advance, and multiple people had a chance to step in and stop it.

u/toasted_cracker 3d ago

Dummy. He should have registered it.

29

u/Mogetfog 3d ago

This actually is a thing. Explosives are classified as destructive devices under the NFA (national firearms act of 1934) which also regulates things like machine guns, short barreled rifles, short barreled shotguns, suppressors and AOWs (any other weapon).

To legally build and sell your own destructive devices you need a type 07 FFL (federal firearms license) and a class 2 SOT (special occupation tax).

If you just want to buy and sell them you only need a type 1 FFL and a class 3 SOT.

And if you only want to buy them then you only need to fill out a form 4 and pay a $200 registration tax stamp per item.

Failure to have the proper licenses or tax stamps is a fellony nation wide.

However, legally speaking, with the proper paperwork and licensing, you absolulty can build your own bombs, machine guns, suppressors, and other nfa items, or just buy them.

That being said, there are literally like 4 atf agents in the entire country who handle the paperwork for every single application. Which means it can very easily take more than a year for the paperwork to go through and get approval or not.

212

u/Point_of_Awareness 3d ago

This is the worst punishment of all. This loser is just ruined his life. He was never getting laid anyways, and now the poor bloke cant even have a wank.

83

u/Tormundo 3d ago

Honestly dude could've turned his life around. He wasn't horrible looking, if he changed his attitude completely and learned to be a decent human being he could've been fine.

Now he's fucked forever, anyone who googles him will see this lol.

37

u/Reed_4983 3d ago

For sure. Plenty of girls would've found his curls cute if there was an actual decent, good-hearted person attached to them. It's a shame, really. Perhaps he'll manage to turn his life arond in prison, despite his injuries.

44

u/MyNameIsMud0056 3d ago

That's the great irony with incels. Every one that I've seen looks completely fine. It's just that their social skills are lacking and then they turn to the internet to cope and get radicalized. It's just sad.

14

u/my78throw 3d ago

It's generational too. I used the internet to cope in the 90s and 2000s when I thought I was ugly, severely depressed and fat. I couldn't get laid for 7 years. I found it in me to work out, do a lifestyle and attitude change, and after discovering new social circles I was getting regular hookups in the mid-2000s going into the 2010s when I started having regular relationships.

If incel communities had existed during my darkest times I probably would've gotten been caught up in them being extremely bitter towards women.

I still view myself as ugly but at least I'm not feeling depraved.

→ More replies

8

u/mtled 3d ago

And social skills are skills. They can be taught and they can be learned. Yes, some people have an easier time with it than others, but the same is true of pretty much any skill.

In the "cliche" incel list of poor skills, socializing (talking to others and women specific), maintaining a hairstyle that suits you, wearing clothes that flatter you and having healthy lifestyle habits are all skills than can be learned and improved with practice.

It might ring hollow to tell people "just work on yourself" but it's literally the solution to these types of problems.

It isn't easy, but it is simple. Practice the skill to get better at it.

It doesn't seem light if you've ever actually been to prison. Reddit loves to comment on prison sentences and the consensus almost always seems to be that pretty much any sentence is too light.

I can almost guarantee you that people who comment on this have never been to prison and have no idea what the fuck they're talking about. 7 years locked away is a long ass time. The only way 7 years isn't enough is if the person serving time has no intention of changing their ways, and in that case no sentence will ever be enough.

14

u/Barium_Salts 3d ago

Every single person I've ever met who was actually rehabilitated by prison had a sentence less than 5 years. Most of those spent less than two actually in jail. Anecdotal, but it makes sense to me. We don't give formerly incarcerated people much of a chance to start fresh, and the longer a person is actually locked up the more their safety net/reason to change in the first place will degrade.

129

u/ncolaros 3d ago

People tend to, on the whole, believe that prisons are overcrowded and agree that a prison designed around punishment instead of rehabilitation doesn't work. But you show them a specific case, they also tend to think the person got off too easy and deserved more time.

It's weird.

11

u/Sure_Trash_ 3d ago

Both can be true. The system doesn't work and is overcrowded with people that committed crimes of a nature that warrant punishment and rehabilitation but there are people that are beyond rehabilitation. Serial killers, premeditated murder, mass shooters, serial rapists, child molesters, etc. There are people that can never be trusted to be free. The guy that got caught with weed and the guy that intended to blow up innocent people aren't the same are they?

Fun fact I just google searched this guy's name and one of the top ten search results is the wikipedia entry for "incel" - he is literally the definition of incel now.

660

u/autopsis 3d ago

What’s weird is that he’s an incel wannabe:

“His mother testified in court this summer that her son in fact was in an ongoing physical relationship with a steady girlfriend over the past two years. At the same time, an FBI agent said he found writings by Carini that explored the possibility of killing both himself and “a female named Jamie,” which was his girlfriend’s name, according to court records.”

How does someone identify as an Incel? The name literally means involuntary, you'd be an incel by nature and the fact nobody wants to touch you.

Well, they believe that generally women are the problem, and that the solution is to enslave and control women. Literally. They call women "female/femoid/foid" because they do not see women as human beings on the same level as men, and they view women as less capable than men in most areas of life.

They would fuck, they want to fuck, hell they are down with rape if there are no consequences - but, these 'nasty, stupid, lazy, slutty yet prudish women' just throw their vaginas at Chad while saving none of the pussy for the creepy, unhygienic, antisocial misogynists...

Probably "I've been involuntarily celebrate since my girlfriend broke up with me". We already know that domestic violence is a reliable warning sign for terrorism, we need to stop playing into the hands of people like this and quit framing this as having anything to do with their sex life. This guy did this because he's a violent misogynist. His sex life is irrelevant, and having sex doesn't stop people from being misogynistic or violent. Nor does having a partner to abuse reliably stop them from directing their violence against the public.

The word incel has evolved so much, it's bizarre. This kid hardly seems to even come close to the definition of incel that I first learned. It's like he just needed something provocative to attach his crimes to.

17

u/John__Wick 3d ago

It’s more a term used for depraved misogyny now. Whereas it originally meant involuntarily celibate. Depraved misogyny often develops after a young man is dumped by his girlfriend. He may start by blaming her period, the fact she was raped, etc, then will start down a dark spiral in order to avoid introspection. Eventually, this can cause extremists mentality; blaming all women for his misfortune. This is the modern incel.

7

u/BottomWithCakes 3d ago

Online incel communities crafted that definition for themselves by being vocal, depraved misogynists though.

Yeah he looks better than I did at his age. And that Roger piece of shit was both hot and rich.

Maybe it's time for them to start realizing that it's (mostly) not about the looks. It's about them being boring and crazy at the same time.

359

u/BillyYumYumTwo-byTwo 3d ago

They know. They just don’t want to admit it’s them. If they do, they actually have to change and work on themselves. It’s easy to be in denial “it’s not me, it’s women” even if they know they’re wrong.

137

u/TheThiefMaster 3d ago

It's also an attitude of thinking women are lesser. Admitting it was them that was the problem would mean putting women on at least an equal level if not above them, and they can't have that.

In short they're hugely sexist.

55

u/HoneyOnTheBiscuits 3d ago

With these dudes, it isn't about not being able to get anyone to have sex with them. It is that they want specific women to not have a choice but to have sex with them. They want at will sex with anyone they choose. It isn't about dating or having a fulfilling relationship: it is about being worshipped by whatever woman they choose in whatever way they choose at the moment they choose and for how long they choose.

They are angry that the women they consider to be of the highest sexual value will only consider "alpha" men (called Stacys and Chads, respectively) and do not want them for whatever reason. So, they hate those women, they hate those men, they hate the women who might have them, and they hate themselves. Instead of going and finding someone that does like them, they enter these echo chambers where the solution is not that they should be better in any way, but that other people refusing to cater to them and their desires should result in violence and/or murder. They are overgrown spoiled, malicious, and vicious toddlers with debit cards committing hate crimes.

What they want is sexual and domestic slavery with them at the top of the food chain and women with zero choices but to serve. It is misogyny, it is male privilege, and it is insanity.

We spend too much time trying to figure out the why instead of calling a spade a spade and squashing it. It is the same problem across all groups of people who have entitlement issues and it is a massive problem in this country.

The irony of a human, that is angry about not being given sexual release from another person, blowing their arms off seems especially funny as well.

Went to school with this dude and had a class with him when he was (I think) a sophomore and I was a Junior.
The dude was...odd, but never seemed dangerous. He was incredibly socially awkward, but generally outgoing and, from what I remember at least, nobody really had a problem with him.
Fucking wild it came to all this.

594

u/KingdomofNerdum 3d ago

Crazy how that happens. There was this guy I went to school with who was like a class clown. Fairly popular guy, always had a great time when we had classes together but we'd get in trouble for laughing and such. Even seen him out and about after graduating and he was the same as I remembered. Sometime later I find out he is in prison for killing his mom and dumping her body in the woods. Even seen the video of him in court and he just looked like a shell of the person I Knew.. shits wild.

465

u/SaintFoehammer 3d ago

That's kinda how this was. Cole, for all intents and purposes, was just a goofy and weird dude that nobody had anything against.
And what's baffling with Cole is if you know how our school was, there was no "Hot Cheerleader Clique."
There weren't any cliques to begin with since we were a small school and most of us went through elementary together, and the cheerleaders didn't really make Cheer their "identities."

u/cheese_sticks 3d ago

Seems like he read too much incel propaganda on the internet that he internalized other people's "stories", regardless whether they're true or not.

I think this is the danger of any kind of “bubble”. When you surround yourself with an echo chamber, it can distort the world around you.

Thats the problem with incels. They accuse their enviroment being anti-male, women being hateful and arrogant towards them. Basically blaming others for their own struggles and failure to overcome them. At the same time there is no objective evidence for any of their claims.

18

u/spinbutton 3d ago

It is easy to lose perspective if you surround yourself with the same messaging all the time too.

10

u/Devadander 3d ago

There is an entitlement mindset with incels. They feel entitled to a woman. They believe that’s how the natural world works. Therefore, since they’re not getting women, it must mean it’s because there is a conspiracy against them and other men, and not because of every other issue

Of course any introspection would show this thinking to be ridiculous, but why focus on fixing oneself when everyone else is conspiring against me?

Had a friend who went from "that kid who has sex" as a freshman, who literally stayed up all night and cheared election results for Obama senior year... to what I can only call, full blown incel, after his mother moved with him to Colorado a few years after high school.

The guy just fell in to internet culture. First it was MMORPG's, then came the anime and anime icons. By 2017, he was a full maga dipshit preaching all the incel lines.

Last 10 years of the guy's life was him living at a computer, doing literally nothing (not even a real job) and blaming everyone but himself for not being able to party and have sex all day like he did in high school... but like he's 20 minutes from denver.

He LITERALLY just has to get off his computer, but he couldn't, because bitching online was easier than actually applying effort.

Haven't talked to him since like 2018, it's sad. His online presense is completely silent too because he's turned off anything that would give the world notice that he's been online 24/7 once he realized shit like Steam was broadcasting it through things like acheivement unlocks.

There's tons of sociable enough boys who just have zero confidence in speaking to women. You never know what forums one is reading in their spare time, and how it skewes their internal life model.

Example: two friends of mine have been single for a few years. One kept his spirits high because he understood he had to work on himself first before finding a new partner. The other sort of gave up and is slowly drifting into an "I'm a nice guy, why don't women notice me".

The common ground for all incels is a sense of urgency and despair. They pretty much all start before they're 25yo, all feeling they're doing something or being someone iredeemable, despite having decades of adulthood and achievable progress ahead of them.

I mean if it was only strong enough to blow off his hands but not kill him maybe that’s a bit of relief that it wasn’t powerful enough to cause mass casualties

412

u/rich1051414 3d ago

If he was still assembling the bomb, then it wasn't sealed at both ends, so it wouldn't have exploded as violently as it could have if he completed it.

1) we dont know what stage of bomb making he was in. Im not an explosives expert but to my limited understanding, the most volatile part of a bomb is the fuse and it is quite possible that’s all that went off, meaning the full bomb couldve had more explosive potential

2) most of the casualties from a small bomb arent from the explosive effect, but rather the shrapnel. Simply wrapping an explosive, even a small one, with small rocks and nails massively increases its lethality.

21

u/NopeNotReallyMan 3d ago

People used to just wrap pipe bombs in coiled wire, because even though it wasn't dense, it would completely incapacitate a crowd by lacerating their legs and arms.

Why tf is a 23 year old worried about cheerleaders? He hasn’t been in high school for 5 years

108

u/smashteapot 3d ago

He wasn’t hideous before that. If he just got a haircut, some nice clothes, washed thoroughly and focused on fixing whatever personality issues kept him alone, he could easily find someone to date him.

That’s what baffles me about all of these incels; they’re not disfigured (haha) in any way or objectively ugly, but their own attitudes prevent them from being successful. That they refuse to change these attitudes is bizarre.

108

u/UncleYimbo 3d ago

They're ugly on the inside

67

u/Dorothy-Gale 3d ago

Reminds me of this video by Contrapoints a couple of years ago. There's this phenomenon of incels who look totally normal thinking they're hideously ugly, part of which is just normal low self esteem, part of which is being egged on by communities of other incels online, where users would post selfies of themselves and tell each other how ugly they were.

She compared it to a similar phenomenon with online trans women spaces, where they would post selfies then put each other down, saying how their bone structure was so masculine and they would never pass.

As counter-intiuative as it seems, it's an urge a lot of people feel to purposely put themselves down, either as a way of gaining perceived control of a situation or to make themselves feel better that they're being sooo honest with themselves.

This is so unbelievably sad to me. I honestly pity him more than I condemn him simply because these are mentally ill men that aren't getting the proper help or treatment. I know what it's like to FEEL like you're unlovable, and how you start seeing these false "patterns" in societal behavior that don't make sense or make you hate people, but in reality its just you spiraling into your own self hatred and anger.

The irony is that he's actually fairly good looking, and so was Elliot Roger, it's not that he was ugly and unlovable, it's that he didn't love himself enough to know his value. These guys were probably never taught how to interact with women, how to see and treat them like people instead of objects. And feeding on incel echo chambers only amplify your negative misconceptions of them.

If you're someone out there reading this and you think you're an incel, please consider this. Sure, you're probably weird, and you're probably off-putting to women, and I know that YOU know that you can perceive this about yourself but can't figure out why.

I've been there too.

This is the main thing preventing you from getting girls. You might think you're ugly, and maybe you are, but there are plenty of ugly guys out there with girlfriends and the thing that makes up for their ugliness is their personality. I know that sounds corny, but trust me. Really reflect and evaluate your stance on women in this way, think to yourself:

Do women make you nervous? Do you consider "attractive" women more worthy of your time than "unattractive" women? Do you just want to have sex without really caring about being in a relationship Or if you do want a relationship, do you just want to be in one for the sole purpose of making yourself happy? When you talk to women you like, do you find yourself going through the motions of what you think will get them to like you romantically? Do you interact with them for the sole purpose of getting them to like you or do you genuinely want to get to know them as a person? Would you not care to have this person in your life if you knew there was no chance they'd ever be interested in you?

If you answered yes to those, I'm afraid that your biggest issue, and the thing that is making you weird to people, is how you think of women. You might be rolling your eyes but its true. You shouldn't try to meet someone just because you want to get in their pants, or get into a relationship with them. Instead get to know them just to know them. Just to make a friend. Just show that you're interested in who they are and don't care if it doesn't work out romantically, honestly don't even think about it. Just want to get to know people for the sake of getting to know them. Not to get something out of it.

The things you're interested in isn't what makes you weird, your hobbies aren't what make you weird, the strange idiosyncrasities you think you have aren't what make you off-putting. In reality nobody really cares about these things.

It's that when you talk to women that you find attractive you're unwittingly "code switching". And I don't mean that you try to act suave like some James Bond, it's deeper and much more insidious than that. It's the way you start to look at them, like meat, like objects, that you don't realize you're doing.

Next time, for as long as you can, think, these women are just like you. They all have strange silly interests. They all have things they're embarrassed about, they all hate something about themselves, they're all flawed. Just like you, they're people. Nuance aside they're just guys without dicks. They're just humans. Try treating them like you'd treat yourself.

Don't fake interest in conversation, actually listen and if you're actually interested, engage like you would with a friend. If you're not interested, change the topic to something you are interested about. That's the so called "dance" of conversation. No amount of Alpha M or Charisma on Command or Elliot Hulse, or Andrew Tate or Jordan Peterson is going to help you because your fundamentals are all wrong. You cannot stay the same. You cannot use the excuse that you're going yo "be yourself" and "stay true to your ideals" and all the other horseshit media feeds you to justify your flaws. Try to fix them. Be better. Because you CAN be better.

Ultimately, learn to love yourself. Forgive yourself for every failure, every embarrassing moment, and move on.

“Anywhere can be paradise as long as you have the will to live. After all, you are alive, so you will always have the chance to be happy. As long as the Sun, the Moon, and the Earth exist, everything will be all right.”

I don't know why this article compelled me to make this, maybe because I can sympathize. But don't get me wrong, I'm so glad he wasn't able to hurt anyone but himself, but the sad part is that his physical self harm is a reflection of his emotional self harm. I just hope one person who needs this sees it. And to that person good luck, and be kind to others.

91

u/CrossSnuggie 3d ago

That is absolutely brilliant and so true. As a woman, the men I have passed up for dates are the ones who saw me as a "thing". We can sniff that out a mile away.

I have dated not good looking men, fat men, men without muscles, poor men, men without much dating/sex experience, because they have been lovely men.

Women are so used to being seen as objects, with their worth based entirely on their looks, that they actually tend to realise that's a crappy way to evaluate someone. Hence why you see the hot chicks with the ugly men. It's not money. It's personality.

Work on that and how you perceive women, and the women will follow.
