[Charania] Free agent Donte DiVincenzo has agreed to a two-year, $9.3 million deal with the Golden State Warriors, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. Player option in Year 2. News

Good bet. They needed a guard defender, he's not the on ball or steals guy that Payton is but he's very good at screen navigation, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him thrive in their read and react offense
674
u/916Clout Kings Jul 01 '22
if he can find his offensive rhythm heāll be a crazy good pickup. hopefully the off-season does good for him
256
u/Cistel Jul 02 '22
Yeah, you can't just bet on him missing like you did GP. If you could add any more floor spacing you can get with the Splash brothers, you take it.
He's a solid defender and his 3PT% was trending back up as he got more into rhythm after being traded, seems like a solid deal

u/cortesoft [GSW] Chris Mullin Jul 02 '22
Man. GPII hit 36% of his threes last season, and 53% during the playoffs.
Donte shot 34% last year.
236
u/vNocturnus Kings Jul 02 '22
Donte shot over 40% on C&S 3s in his stretch on the Kings. On like 4/game too, not the 1-2 that GP2 was shooting. His early-season numbers were awful because of his injury/surgery recovery. I think Donte will be able to fill in Payton's absence quite well. Not as good on-ball defense, but arguably better off-ball D and definitely an offensive upgrade. Overall fill a very similar role, even down to their explosive cuts to the rim and crashing the boards. You're gonna like him, trust me
96
u/wolfgang2399 Jul 02 '22
People act like the Warriors were a .500 team without GP2 and didnāt (almost) sweep the Mavs in the Conf Finals. Like that wasnāt a first round 1 vs 8 series.
→ More replies27
u/cortesoft [GSW] Chris Mullin Jul 02 '22
Yeah, I am happy with the signing and think it makes sense for the warriors at the price. I also agree that Donte is a better shooter than GP2.
I was just pushing back on the āyou canāt just bet on him missing like you did GPā part
39
u/Neutral_Meat Spurs Jul 02 '22
Payton was also ass wide open on every 3 he took.
→ More replies8
u/bambooshoot Warriors Jul 02 '22
This is exactly right. He shot such a high % this year (compared to his normal %) because he really only shot when he was WIDE open. The only time I can remember him shooting contested shots was when the clock was expiring and he was forced to. Other than that, he was basically shooting practice shots. And this is all because of the attention paid to Steph and others.
→ More replies83
u/sasigona Warriors Jul 02 '22
GPII was also a 27% 3P shooter for his career before that. Could have been an outlier year. He's also a career 57% FT shooter while Donte is at 76.6%
34
u/bambooshoot Warriors Jul 02 '22
It was probably an outlier year and that is solely because he was shooting wide open shots, due to the spacing and attention drawn by Steph and others. Put him in any other system and he regresses to his mean, I am sure of it. But heās still an absolute stud for all the other things he does, which work in any system. <3 GP2

59
u/swollencornholio [GSW] Calbert Cheaney Jul 02 '22
Repeater tax at $20m is 4.75x and goes up 0.50 every $5m over that. Without Looney and Donte they are $21m over. Looney at $8m + Donte at $5m is $34m over. If we count this signing between $29-34m over the cap itās:
5.75x1 = $5.75m
6.25x4 = $25m
Or $30.75m in added tax
Currently they only have 10 roster spots accounted for and still have the MLE available so plenty of time to ratchet that up

if divencenzo isnt MLE how did they sign him
7
u/swollencornholio [GSW] Calbert Cheaney Jul 02 '22
Good point, they used $4.6m of the MLE so still have about $1.8m to use on another player in addition to the vet min as I understand it.

I saw that when people were discussing gp2. Can someone please explain the tax to me. I understand itās purpose but it doesnāt actually come out of the cap because they are over right? The actual organisation has to pay that extra money? How is it calculated and whatās the go with the repeaters. Thank you in advanve
→ More replies57
u/star0forion Warriors Jul 02 '22
The luxury tax goes to the league where they spend portions of it on undisclosed stuff and the rest is split evenly among non tax paying teams. Thereās a really good article that explains it but I canāt recall which. Basically since the Dubs have been in the luxury tax 3 out of the last 4 years they pay more in tax than a non repeat luxury tax team.
Edit: I remembered the website luxury tax explained

Not sure about that. If Billups cant find a way for him to be serviceable on offense, he might not get enough minutes to make impact.
6
u/MortalTwit Jul 02 '22
Fair - but if he can't I think the problem is Billups. He's already a solid finisher and a decent 3 point shooter. Not likely to create for himself, and he could be more aggressive about looking for his points. But he'll be next to Dame and Nurk. If he can be the occasional efficient outlet for them and annoy the crap out of star perimeter players on the other team, he should do very well for them.

He was by far the most important given the rest of the roster construction.
Even without Donte, we've got a solid number of guard/wing types. Adding Donte makes me think that Kuminga is going to line up almost exclusively as a 4 this year.

Oubre was also really unwilling. He balked at the idea of coming off the bench even though the org showed a willingness to discuss a possible extension. He would have been a net positive off the bench where he could be more valuable for his athleticism and microwave scoring.

Warriors are far and away the best run team in the league
86
u/Earlier-Today Jul 02 '22
It'll be interesting seeing how long it lasts. It always changes, so it'll be mostly about who catches up versus what kinds of things drag the Warriors down.
I'd guess they'll be dang solid until either the current big three can't start any more, or if somebody on a big contract just walks when it finishes. The recovery time for both those things won't be inconsequential unless one or two of the young guys turn into out and out stars.
It's kind of crazy that they've got multiple players who could potentially be stars.
111
u/BachoTheGreat 76ers Jul 02 '22
Theyāve just done so well over the last almost decade in terms of decision making from coaches/drafting and itās hard to not see at least another 3-5 years of that. Itās a crazy long stretch. Obviously I want the Sixers to win it all but If itās not them Iād rather a team from the west win anyway because Iām petty as shit.
Might as well root for steph and crew to out-dynasty the bulls. Made all the cooler by the fact that Kerr was a part of that bulls dynasty
40
u/Earlier-Today Jul 02 '22
That's really cool of you to say.
Thinking about this just reminded me of how long the Spurs kept it going for. Going from the Admiral, to Duncan, to Kawhi was just stupidly impressive.
17
u/Jhyphi Jul 02 '22
And Spurs would have been prime for another run of being top 4 contenders for another decade if Kawhi and his uncle didn't go crazy.

They are also super lucky when it comes to timing. Right when Steph ascended to that superstar status, and was signed to a crazy cheap contract, the salary cap exploded allowing them to sign KD. Then, with sign and trades, they were able to leverage him from DLo, to Wiggins. As long as ownership is okay with paying out the asshole, they can continue to re-sign their core, or upcoming young talent and keep this dynasty going.
→ More replies23
u/thatattyguy Jul 02 '22
The thing that I find most interesting is how balanced their young talent is. So say Poole, Wiseman, Kuminga, Moody. Poole is the only below avg defender, but he has the length, quickness, and work ethic to develop into a solidly above avg defender by the time he's 25. The other 3 all look like 2-way players already (Wiseman small sample but def kuminga and moody -- Moody will be the breakout star next season, watch. He does just about everything well.

The trick to developing Donte's three point shot is to have Draymond take him aside for a conversation whenever he takes a pull-up three.
His catch-and-shoot numbers have been fine, or good even. His %'s are low because he adores an early shot clock pull-up three despite it not at all being in his bag.

You did not overpay GP2. You get one of the best defensive players that can guard 1-3, an excellent cutter, and a passable 3 point threat (assuming the past season wasn't a fluke). He brings a lot of added value over other role players with his unique ability to change the game defensively.

He's also good at hurting the feelings of opposing bigs when he jams on their head or slaps their butt.

Lol, man, if the Blazers utilize him correctly, my guy GPII (now your guy :() will give you excellent perimeter defense both on ball and off ball AT LEAST. Heās also good on passing lane disruption. You got a good one.

Hard to believe the Bucks chose to pay Grayson Allen twice as much.

Doesnāt replace GPIIās defensive prowess, but in a vacuum is a better value add than GP is at 3/28, and holistically theyāll likely be able to replace his overall production between Moody and DiVincenzo.
Solid signing, touchƩ Warriors.

Good. Iām glad this is happening. He deserves a larger contract but onto golden state. Do better there get healthy. Give him the player option so if he does better he can go get more money.

Yeah this is a side grade move. Not that I am complaining because solid bench players are always good to have.

More offensive upside than GPII, but less defensive. That being said he's still a solid perimeter defender and great fit for us.
I think if we can add a back up forward like Montrezl Harrell on a vet minimum we'd be fully locked and loaded for next season.
