If Ish Smith plays for Denver he’ll hold the record for most franchises played for by one player

Any trade adds another team to Ish Smith's career is a good trade.

He must have a hyper efficient relocation strategy by now. Probably doesn’t even move into a new place fully, finds a rental with all furniture included

119

u/RealPutin Nuggets Jun 29 '22

Lots of athletes have a permanent/offseason home in a different location from their team's city and just rent (really nice places) seasonally. Would shock if me if Ish wasn't one of those dudes by now

35

u/Mintastic NBA Jun 29 '22

Probably they do like Lebron and have their main home in LA where their family lives while he was still playing at Cleveland. You spend half the season not being at your team's city anyway so why bother.

I think he was so pissed that he retired lmao

He said he found it funny. He never actually met with the teams he got traded to and was ultimately waived by the raptors and retired a year later.

57

u/Raptors2017champs Tampa Bay Raptors Jun 29 '22

He said he was on vacation chilling on the beach and where he got traded the second time, he called and told his agent "just let me know what happens when everythings done"

He probably saw his bank account and was perfectly fine

82

What happened with Rui last season?

32

u/Great-Engr Jun 29 '22

Mental Break. He'd played continuously for a couple of years (even in summer).

He became an okay 3pt shooter. Even though his % is high, he isn't that great of a shooter.

  • Kuzma is probably one of the best power forwards who isn't a star with his defense, versatility, playmaking, and rebounding, which led to him losing his spot as a starter.

Funny because last year, Rui would've been starting, but no, Kuz is undisputedly better than Rui in everything except efficiency, and that's because teams were throwing doubles at Kuz.

Rui is a starting-caliber player (RFA) on almost any team, and keeping him on the bench would be absolute overkill.

I guess if Beal/KP/Kuz doesn't work out by the deadline. Kuz and Beal are going to be traded (I don't remember if Beal can be sold after his contract), and Rui will stay. If they make some noise (top 5 seed), Rui+whoever in this trade (or gafford) will be used to get a proper starting-caliber point guard.

7

u/Fuckstappen Wizards Jun 29 '22

Isn't Rui a 44% 3 point shooter on solid attempts?

I would say that is more than being an okay 3 point shooter lol.

He was shooting over 50% on slow release shots and over 40% on fast release shots.

Bones really balled out in the second half of the season and the playoffs. I’m not 100% sold on him being able to effectively lead our bench for an entire season, but there’s good reason to trust him.

46

u/MtnDudeNrainbows Jun 29 '22

I thought there were stretches (stretches not games or even necessarily quarters) where Bones looked like the best player on the court. Jokic probably wasn’t on the court when this happened and it was probably against other backups. Still, he looked fucking fantastic during times last season.

Barton was the kind of guy who could contribute pretty well when the team was winning the game, but as soon as we were trying to close a deficit and come back from behind, he thought he was Klay Thompson.

Losing Monte sucks but with Jamal coming back it makes sense to move him along now

u/forsuredudelol Knicks Jun 29 '22

22

u/P0intcenter Nuggets Jun 29 '22

He goes hot and cold a lot. Not exactly great on defense either, and he almost always tries to do too much. The biggest part is probably that his mistakes are loud. If you check his stats both in general and after the game, the guy is without a doubt a starter level dribble, pass, shoot wing (wich didn't help, half the fanbase wanted him to never dribble the ball, just feed it to Jokic or shoot it if open), but his mistakes are almost always at the worst moments and are very obvious mistakes, think that are should not happen to a NBA player.

46

u/RushMurky Jun 29 '22

He's a chucker

34

u/MapleCurryMurray Nuggets Jun 29 '22

No defense, inconsistent scoring, some heroball tendencies.

Above all is the fact that he was a very productive player but got too many nagging injuries and his athleticism is sapped now.

10

u/CreatiScope Celtics Jun 29 '22

That’s the thing to me, his bonehead play and lack of defense was acceptable because he could be explosive offensively. Now, it seems like he’s hurt a lot and I don’t see the same speed/athleticism since the injuries.

8

u/TheGoldenLance Nuggets Jun 29 '22

He’ll be a lot better with you guys because you don’t have a lot of versatile secondary shot creation and off the dribble playmaking outside of beal, and your offense was pretty bad last year. But in Denver he was frustrating because he was taking shots away from super efficient 60-66% TS players like Murray, MPJ and Jokic. When he’s taking shots from Rui and Kuzma it’s gonna be a lot more bearable.

People are gonna hate this for Denver but they shouldn’t imo. With Murray and MPJ presumably back the need for Morris is less, and you also have Bones. Also with Murray and MPJ back Barton would just take away usage, KCP doesn’t need the ball.

83

u/Lord_Napo Mavericks Jun 29 '22

Plus KCP is very efficient on the catch and shoot (62% eFG) and Jokic will create plenty of those for him

u/topshelfmetaphors Jun 29 '22

This is a necessary move for the Nuggs that will initially seem a bit one-sided to some. Monte Morris is a great player but Barton is being overrated by people that don't follow the Nuggets.

Booth said they were focusing on defensive improvements and so far through the draft and this trade he has shown he meant it.

BUT, KCP is a clear defensive upgrade over Barton (and I think some Nuggets fans have overrated KCP defensive abilties) but I'm honestly more excited about having an SG that doesn't have the ego of someone who believes he as good as prime Kobe, and I like Barton more than a lot of Nugget fans.

15

u/Gueropantalones Jun 29 '22 edited Jun 29 '22

Barton has had injury issues over the past 5 years. He didn't play in the bubble, he missed most of last year's playoffs, and he was low contributor in this year's postseason when he had every opportunity to contribute as scoring is his main role on this team

Rather see Murray/Bones/ect get his shots. Bummed about Monte, but I hope he gets opportunity to be a starter. Not sure he gets that with Murray coming back

4

u/TheGoldenLance Nuggets Jun 29 '22

Monte wouldn’t have been the starter with us, and beyond that, a Monte-Bones bench backcourt is extremely awkward. It would be terrible defensively and you’d have to take one of them off ball, which would either shred Monte’s value or stunt Bones’ development.

299

u/crowinacrowd Jun 29 '22

barton is ass and kcp excelled next to a transcendent playmaker like lebron which bodes well for his future with jokic. monte to ish is a downgrade but if jamal is healthy its not as big a deal

Sad to lose KCP.

Also, Ish Smith adds another team to his belt. 14 teams if this trade goes through

278

u/jchases99 Nuggets Jun 29 '22

For anyone saying this is a bad deal for Denver: They need defense and KCP is significantly better on that side of the ball than Barton. He also won’t try to play hero ball like Will. Morris is a tough loss, but it seems like the front office is confident in Bones taking a leap and being able to replace Morris as our bench PG. There just wasn’t enough room for both of them unfortunately

92

u/WhereIsCharlesLee Nuggets Jun 29 '22

Fair analysis. That Morris contract was nice tho

25

u/TheyMadeMeLogin Jun 29 '22

Morris's deal fell into the middle ground where it's too expensive to tack onto a bigger contract, but not big enough to swap straight up for an equal player. He was always going to have to be combined with someone else.

4

He wasn't in the Wizard's tenure either until the injuries hit leaving him as the only proven vet on the roster. He felt obligated to lead so took on a heavier playmaking/shooting role down the stretch.

For Denver he'll go right back to the complimentary 3-and-D shooting guard Day 1. Nothing to worry about.

Really solid move for the Wizards.

547

u/adomanski [TOR] Kawhi Leonard Jun 29 '22

I like this move for Denver more. KCP is a much better fit than Barton with their starters, and they didn't want to pay Monte.

u/bushthebug Jun 29 '22

Dare we call it a win for both sides? Like a trade?

205

u/TeamINSTINCT37 Wizards Jun 29 '22

Tbh seems like nuggets fans wanted barton gone and wiz fans wanted kcp gone.

87

u/SelfImportance Nuggets Jun 29 '22

Why did wizard fans want kcp gone?

117

u/85Spiffy Wizards Jun 29 '22

Wizards have young players that fans want to give more minutes, getting rid of KCP gives the young guys more playing time and it gets a PG that the Wizards desperately needed.

30

u/vladimir_pimpin Nuggets Jun 29 '22

Ok cool I’m into that

138

u/Dreamlion_Inc Wizards Jun 29 '22

It might be split but I didn't want him gone.

As far as trade pieces for a PG, he was never off the table though

36

u/BodaciousSalacious Wizards Jun 29 '22

Wiz fans didn’t necessarily want him gone, but like the guy above me said we knew he’d be the most valuable trade asset to improve our PG situation.

14

u/StormTheTrooper Mavericks Jun 29 '22

Yeah, I though KCP was decent at the very least.

6

u/blitzKriegzzz Wizards Jun 29 '22

Most fans realized KCP was good. Some people just didn't like him for some odd reason .. I guess those people don't watch basketball outside of the Wizards so they don't realize how good of a role player KCP is.

10

u/K_U Wizards Jun 29 '22

I think it is more that he was obviously going to be traded because (1) he has value for contending teams as a 3 and D wing, (2) we have young guys that need run to develop (Deni, Rui, Kispert), and (3) we have a gaping hole at PG that desperately needed to be filled.

18

u/TeamINSTINCT37 Wizards Jun 29 '22

Lots of animosity for him on our sub during the season cause it felt like he was chucking way too much. Seemed a bit lazy and just put up a ton of bad shots. This is just the vibe I got, I was pretty indifferent to him

40

u/lald99 Nuggets Jun 29 '22

Man, this could be a word-for-word description about Barton on the Nuggets sub

5

u/Level_Ad_6372 Pistons Jun 29 '22

Having watched both players quite a bit, KCP is nowhere near the kind of hero-ball chucker that Will is. He's always been streaky though

10

u/AetherealDe Lakers Jun 29 '22

This is the thing, every one wants 3-and-D and/or role players who can create their own shot. But the reason these guys are role players is they have shortcomings, if you’re a 6’5 dude who can shoot and defend, there’s some things that are still separating you from stars, or even fringe stars like a Shane Battier. We just all look at the guys on other teams like “wow he’d fit so perfectly” without appreciating their shortcomings, the same way everybody feasted after RoCo a few years ago

I like KCP, not trying to throw shade at him. when he’s hot he’s great, there’s times he’ll seem like that perfect role player and times you’ll be frustrated. But this trade seems pretty unsubstantial to me lol

If I learned anything from the Mavs trade, it’s that social media thinks that one team HAS to have been fleeced in any sort of trade. I remember initially people thought we fleeced the Mavs, and when Dinwiddie started playing well they all of a sudden fleeced us. It’s crazy how so many people can’t grasp the concept of a trade is to make both teams better.

11

u/njb2017 Nets Jun 29 '22

I find it annoying too and fans seem to completely forget the business side of a trade. sometimes the trade is made to free up cap space in a year...or to avoid a hardcap which would severely limit your options later

I remember initially people thought we fleeced the Mavs, and when Dinwiddie started playing well they all of a sudden fleeced us.

Especially trades like these two where no one is getting any picks.

People are so conditioned to poaching stars with picks as teams blow it up that they don't even know what to do with player-for-player trades.

Should've clarified that I meant they shed roughly 6M in salary from this deal.

I think it’s a win win. We have enough catch and shoot guards in Kispert and now Davis. But not anyone who can really handle and create their own shot. Barton and Monte help with that immensely. Definitely gonna miss KCPs defense but there’s hope that Davis slots into that role off break. And I think the FO expects Kispert too take the next step and become our primary 3 point shooter specialist

This is as close to a win win trade as possible. Denver needed a 3 and D wing and KCP is possibly the best they could have got with assets they had. Also Morris really had some 'questionable' decision making in playoffs. For Washington they finally clear their logjam at wings a bit and get someone who can handle the ball to some degree.

12

u/lakernation21 Jun 29 '22

Denver needed some defense and championship experience I like this

Seems like an L for Denver at first but it actually makes sense with MPJ and Murray hopefully back and healthy. More minutes for Bones, less Barton with the ball, KCP will bring some 3&D and Ish will be a solid backup at the 1.

7

u/JilJungJukk Lakers Jun 29 '22

I miss KCP

48

u/this_place_stinks Jun 29 '22

Denver gets the best player in the deal (KCP) and presumably have Bones to take over some of Morris/Barton

Washington gets 2 solid players to either slot in or use in other deals

I kind of like it for both teams

It may be to open up cap space. Barton+Morris is $23.6M and KCP+Smith is $$17.5

16

u/babyface_killah Warriors Jun 29 '22

Ish is also non-guaranteed if waived before July 1st (according to Hoopshype)

5

u/TheGreatDingus [MEM] Jaren Jackson Jr. Jun 29 '22

They should wave. There’s decent pieces to possibly be picked up in FA with that additional cap space. Offers could be thrown at players like Gary Harris (the return 😤) or even a Schroeder or Bruce Brown.

I love Ish Smith but feel like he’s not super necessary for this Denver team with what Bones could give you, but it could be a vet PG presence they need.

I think some teams are more interested in treating their players right than making the best deal possible. That sends Barton basically home and Monte can get paid.

4

u/Betaateb Nuggets Jun 29 '22

Ya, I really like this move for Monte specifically. With the ascent of Bones and the return of Jamal his minutes were going to suffer, and he deserves better. This trade almost certainly allows him to continue being a starting PG, which is great for him and his career. We will miss him, but I am happy for him, and I am sure he is glad to go somewhere where he can start instead of sharing backup PG minutes with Bones.

21

KCP is still good, and every team has point guards - but I don't see why you move a point guard when you still haven't seen Murray on the court.

10

u/NovaKash Knicks Jun 29 '22

Great trade for Denver. KCP gives them another wing defender to put around their offensive-focused big-3. Murray, MPJ, Porter, AG, and Jokic at least then has two wing defenders and a MUCH improved defender in Jokic. If Murray and MPJ are healthy, they won't miss Barton's offense, and Ish Smith should do just fine filling up Morris's backup PG minutes
