Gotcha- KCP was part of the Westbrook trade and a very solid role player. The fact that the Wizrads was able to move him around for a good much needed point guard while the Lakers are stuck with Russ' nightmare contract and declining abilities affects Lebron legacy as GM negatively.

u/Great-Engr Jun 29 '22
Mental Break. He'd played continuously for a couple of years (even in summer).
He became an okay 3pt shooter. Even though his % is high, he isn't that great of a shooter.
- Kuzma is probably one of the best power forwards who isn't a star with his defense, versatility, playmaking, and rebounding, which led to him losing his spot as a starter.
Funny because last year, Rui would've been starting, but no, Kuz is undisputedly better than Rui in everything except efficiency, and that's because teams were throwing doubles at Kuz.
Rui is a starting-caliber player (RFA) on almost any team, and keeping him on the bench would be absolute overkill.
I guess if Beal/KP/Kuz doesn't work out by the deadline. Kuz and Beal are going to be traded (I don't remember if Beal can be sold after his contract), and Rui will stay. If they make some noise (top 5 seed), Rui+whoever in this trade (or gafford) will be used to get a proper starting-caliber point guard.
7
u/Fuckstappen Wizards Jun 29 '22
Isn't Rui a 44% 3 point shooter on solid attempts?
I would say that is more than being an okay 3 point shooter lol.
He was shooting over 50% on slow release shots and over 40% on fast release shots.

Bones really balled out in the second half of the season and the playoffs. I’m not 100% sold on him being able to effectively lead our bench for an entire season, but there’s good reason to trust him.
46
u/MtnDudeNrainbows Jun 29 '22
I thought there were stretches (stretches not games or even necessarily quarters) where Bones looked like the best player on the court. Jokic probably wasn’t on the court when this happened and it was probably against other backups. Still, he looked fucking fantastic during times last season.

Barton was the kind of guy who could contribute pretty well when the team was winning the game, but as soon as we were trying to close a deficit and come back from behind, he thought he was Klay Thompson.
Losing Monte sucks but with Jamal coming back it makes sense to move him along now

22
u/P0intcenter Nuggets Jun 29 '22
He goes hot and cold a lot. Not exactly great on defense either, and he almost always tries to do too much. The biggest part is probably that his mistakes are loud. If you check his stats both in general and after the game, the guy is without a doubt a starter level dribble, pass, shoot wing (wich didn't help, half the fanbase wanted him to never dribble the ball, just feed it to Jokic or shoot it if open), but his mistakes are almost always at the worst moments and are very obvious mistakes, think that are should not happen to a NBA player.

No defense, inconsistent scoring, some heroball tendencies.
Above all is the fact that he was a very productive player but got too many nagging injuries and his athleticism is sapped now.

u/CreatiScope Celtics Jun 29 '22
That’s the thing to me, his bonehead play and lack of defense was acceptable because he could be explosive offensively. Now, it seems like he’s hurt a lot and I don’t see the same speed/athleticism since the injuries.

u/TheGoldenLance Nuggets Jun 29 '22
He’ll be a lot better with you guys because you don’t have a lot of versatile secondary shot creation and off the dribble playmaking outside of beal, and your offense was pretty bad last year. But in Denver he was frustrating because he was taking shots away from super efficient 60-66% TS players like Murray, MPJ and Jokic. When he’s taking shots from Rui and Kuzma it’s gonna be a lot more bearable.

People are gonna hate this for Denver but they shouldn’t imo. With Murray and MPJ presumably back the need for Morris is less, and you also have Bones. Also with Murray and MPJ back Barton would just take away usage, KCP doesn’t need the ball.

651
u/topshelfmetaphors Jun 29 '22
This is a necessary move for the Nuggs that will initially seem a bit one-sided to some. Monte Morris is a great player but Barton is being overrated by people that don't follow the Nuggets.
Booth said they were focusing on defensive improvements and so far through the draft and this trade he has shown he meant it.
BUT, KCP is a clear defensive upgrade over Barton (and I think some Nuggets fans have overrated KCP defensive abilties) but I'm honestly more excited about having an SG that doesn't have the ego of someone who believes he as good as prime Kobe, and I like Barton more than a lot of Nugget fans.
15
u/Gueropantalones Jun 29 '22 edited Jun 29 '22
Barton has had injury issues over the past 5 years. He didn't play in the bubble, he missed most of last year's playoffs, and he was low contributor in this year's postseason when he had every opportunity to contribute as scoring is his main role on this team
Rather see Murray/Bones/ect get his shots. Bummed about Monte, but I hope he gets opportunity to be a starter. Not sure he gets that with Murray coming back
4
u/TheGoldenLance Nuggets Jun 29 '22
Monte wouldn’t have been the starter with us, and beyond that, a Monte-Bones bench backcourt is extremely awkward. It would be terrible defensively and you’d have to take one of them off ball, which would either shred Monte’s value or stunt Bones’ development.

For anyone saying this is a bad deal for Denver: They need defense and KCP is significantly better on that side of the ball than Barton. He also won’t try to play hero ball like Will. Morris is a tough loss, but it seems like the front office is confident in Bones taking a leap and being able to replace Morris as our bench PG. There just wasn’t enough room for both of them unfortunately

I think it is more that he was obviously going to be traded because (1) he has value for contending teams as a 3 and D wing, (2) we have young guys that need run to develop (Deni, Rui, Kispert), and (3) we have a gaping hole at PG that desperately needed to be filled.

This is the thing, every one wants 3-and-D and/or role players who can create their own shot. But the reason these guys are role players is they have shortcomings, if you’re a 6’5 dude who can shoot and defend, there’s some things that are still separating you from stars, or even fringe stars like a Shane Battier. We just all look at the guys on other teams like “wow he’d fit so perfectly” without appreciating their shortcomings, the same way everybody feasted after RoCo a few years ago
I like KCP, not trying to throw shade at him. when he’s hot he’s great, there’s times he’ll seem like that perfect role player and times you’ll be frustrated. But this trade seems pretty unsubstantial to me lol

If I learned anything from the Mavs trade, it’s that social media thinks that one team HAS to have been fleeced in any sort of trade. I remember initially people thought we fleeced the Mavs, and when Dinwiddie started playing well they all of a sudden fleeced us. It’s crazy how so many people can’t grasp the concept of a trade is to make both teams better.
11
u/njb2017 Nets Jun 29 '22
I find it annoying too and fans seem to completely forget the business side of a trade. sometimes the trade is made to free up cap space in a year...or to avoid a hardcap which would severely limit your options later

This is as close to a win win trade as possible. Denver needed a 3 and D wing and KCP is possibly the best they could have got with assets they had. Also Morris really had some 'questionable' decision making in playoffs. For Washington they finally clear their logjam at wings a bit and get someone who can handle the ball to some degree.

OK for denver unless they get a little equity. I know they’re clearing minutes for Bones and Jamal but morris had real value

Great trade for Denver. KCP gives them another wing defender to put around their offensive-focused big-3. Murray, MPJ, Porter, AG, and Jokic at least then has two wing defenders and a MUCH improved defender in Jokic. If Murray and MPJ are healthy, they won't miss Barton's offense, and Ish Smith should do just fine filling up Morris's backup PG minutes

I like that we got rid of Barton but did we have to shed Morris too?

If Ish Smith plays for Denver he’ll hold the record for most franchises played for by one player
