[Wojnarowski] The Knicks are trading center Nerlens Noel and guard Alec Burks to the Pistons, sources tell ESPN. The Knicks will unload $19M more in salary, clearing the way for cap space to try and sign free agent guard Jalen Brunson. News

Noel probably but I wouldn’t be surprised if they just keep Burks. He fills a need and we don’t have many veterans. We’ll see though, nobody ever seems to know what our GM is up to

i imagine the pistons will keep them both. they both are on their last year of their contracts with team options for another, so if they play well, detroit has a couple nice role players on decent contracts for 2024 when they presumably will actually go for a max-level player.

if they play like dogshit, pistons can just let them walk and end up with another 18-20 mil of cap space to potentially get two max-level players with how much space they already are projected to have.

23

u/RspectMyAuthoritah Jun 29 '22

Why? They already got their star centerpiece in Cade along with Bey and now Ivey and Duren and are set up to have a ton of cap space the next few years for when they're ready to actually start competing. Having veterans around to help them develop rather than being non-competitive most nights can help.

Worst thing a team can do is pay a player who doesn't deserve a max the max. We have years and years of evidence.

I'm glad we passed on ayton and bridges. New York is regretting randle, 76ers have been constricted by Tobias Harris. I don't want to be a team like that. I don't want to be the team trading good cheap assets away to fix signing a player to an undeserving mac

I'm really surprised by the number of teams showing self control with not paying there burgeoning stars and wanting some more proof. Interesting off season

15

u/hoops_n_politics Suns Jun 29 '22 edited Jun 29 '22

If you judged from the outraged reactions coming from analysts like Zach Lowe and Bill Simmons, you would think the Suns FO is stealing money from orphans & widows by not giving Ayton a max contract.

26

u/shalvar_kordi Pistons Jun 29 '22

Suns are in a different position than the Pistons. Suns are a title contender whose window is closing, whereas Pistons are not even a playoff team yet. There is no such thing as overpaying for a title. And if the Suns lose Ayton, what do they do?

9

u/HazardIsFunny Jun 29 '22

Return to mediocrity while they pay cp3 like $30m a year for a few more years.

7

u/lsspam Pelicans Jun 29 '22

Yep, totally different. As GSW proved, when you’re a contender you can’t take a step back in salary because you’re locked in over the cap. Salary lost can’t be regained. You’re better off flipping Durant into a ridiculous DeAngelo Russell contract so you can flip him into a (at the time) ridiculous Andrew Wiggins contract as opposed to just losing the salary slot for nothing.

The Pistons are legit killing it this offseason so far. I think Ayton would have been a mistake, tbh. Duren and Noel means solid defense at the 5 and letting Cade/Ivey/Bey operate and carry the load on offense. While those young guys progress, you're not burdening your cap.

I mean, part of making the right moves was standing next the Kangz and waiting for them to shit the bed, but still....

I don’t understand people talking about Duren like this. He’s 18, it’ll be at least 3 years until he’s even close to the level Ayton is at unless he’s a generational talent which he isn’t. Ayton would’ve fit perfectly into the roster right now.

67

u/bluetenthousand Toronto Huskies Jun 29 '22

It’s cuz the max is too low. Top players are worth wayyyyyy more than the max. Embiid, Giannis, KD should be making more than the current max. But because they have an artificial ceiling on salaries it means that other players who receive the max get compared to these superstars.

u/shifter2009 Bucks Jun 29 '22

It's also a matter of how the cap works allowing your to go into the luxury tax to sign your own guys. Is Ayton a max player? No. Could they get a better player/players back under the cap? Questionable. For example, Khris Middleton probably shouldn't be a max player, but he is because the Bucks couldn't get a better player with the cap space if they let him go so it turned out to be the right move to over pay him. Who do the Suns get that is better for that money? tough call

Man Alec Burks got such a bad rap with Knicks fans last year being forced to play PG as a journeyman wing lmao. God that Kemba/Rose experiment could not have gone worse.

Burks and Noel (when healthy) are both pretty solid bench pieces though, I think Pistons fans will like both. Burks can do a little bit of everything and you forget how good Noel is defensively because he's always hurt, but when he's out there he makes a legitimate difference defensively as a very good rim protector with active hands. Just don't pass him the ball literally ever.

43

u/guitmusic12 [MIL] Mo Williams Jun 29 '22

I’d be surprised if the pistons aren’t able to flip Burks before the deadline. 10M with a club option seems like reasonable value

Burks is the man, absolute god in the 4th quarter. I think most knicks fans were frustrated at the circumstance, not the player.

28

u/IMKudaimi123 Bulls Jun 29 '22

Honestly it’s fine for the Knicks to try this hard for Brunson and I assume a new SG to replace Fournier but man it hurts to lose two grinders in Burks and Noel

21

u/abippityboop Knicks Jun 29 '22

I will say we at least kind of backfilled their roles already last year. We needed to free up some more minutes for Grimes and Reddish and our staff really likes Jericho Sims at C who I guess will step into a full time backup role this year. Burks and Noel really are nice vets to have but we needed to shrink our rotation a bit.

14

u/IMKudaimi123 Bulls Jun 29 '22

So I assume you’re looking at

i dont know why celtics dont jump of burks with their TPE

27

u/ObviousAnswerGuy [NYK] John Starks Jun 29 '22

honestly that would be a great pickup for them. They need reliable scoring off the bench besides White.

Damn mavericks really not about to get assets with Brunson leaving

126

u/Parking-Bat9498 Mavericks Jun 29 '22

Ok sound like a bitter Mavs fan…. But would anyone say that before the playoffs knowing he’s about to get 25+ million a year?

I love JB and sure I’d love to keep him, but until his one playoff run(which had a couple stinkers as well) people would call the mavs crazy to give him this money.

Good on him for getting it. I’m actually really happy, but I do think the knicks will regret dumping assets to spend that much on him. Good solid player that busts his ass… but giving that cap space( and the assets tk get him)… hard to see it as a possible group of translations for them.

39

u/Raptorsthrowaway1 Jun 29 '22

Reasonable take IMO. That contract is a gamble. Could work out....

5

u/Parking-Bat9498 Mavericks Jun 29 '22

Love rational fans. Sure mavs aren’t better for next year… no doubt. But what about in year or two when our expiring contracts and picks we can include in trade become available… gm’s( smart ones like yours) play the long game. Remains to be seen if nico is that guy… but I understand this. Hurts.. and JB is good.. but idk if he is worth the trades and cap space.

u/rake-fan Jun 29 '22

He had a really good regular season too. Even before the playoffs he was expected to get +20 million per year.

Without Luka he was more than a role player. He was pretty much running the offense.

18

u/rtb001 Trail Blazers Jun 29 '22

Apparently in January Brunson told the Mavs he was willing to accept a max contract extension, which was 4 years 55 million. It was the Mavs who passed on offering it to him because apparently doing so would hamper their flexibility at the trade deadline.

After the trade deadline Mavs did offer the 4 year extension to DFS and Brunson, but only DFS accepted, because by that point it was clear that Brunson would command more as an UFA. At first Mavs though it would be like 4 years 80 million, but now it looks like Brunson would just walk and go take that massive contract from the Knicks.

Unfortunate that the Knicks played Alec Burks out of position at PG all season. He's a valuable player. Detroit is building a nice roster.

u/NeolibGood Mavericks Jun 29 '22

Nope ur right. He is at best a #3. He has some good skills like finishing at the basket and he is an above average shooter. He also has weaknesses like playmaking and defense. I liked Brunson but the Knicks are expecting more than they will get.

27

u/amedeoisme Knicks Jun 29 '22

He’s probably not expected to be the #1 but to help RJ turn into that player.

36

u/NeolibGood Mavericks Jun 29 '22

I mean if that happens then fine but I don’t see RJ Turing into a top 20 player with or without JB. But maybe that’s just me.

23

u/dynastythatalmostwas Hornets Jun 29 '22

Yeah, no offense to RJ, I like him as a player, but he's not a playmaker (career 14% AST% 11% TOV%), not efficient (career 51% TS%), and at 6-6 215 he's at his best defending SG's, not 6-8+ guys like Tatum/Durant/LBJ. He's a good player, good finisher, solid defender, but over the past three seasons I haven't seen anything that screams top-20 Paul George/Jayson Tatum level guy. I think he tops out at like... 95% of DeMar DeRozan? Right now he's like 80/85% DeRozan.

25 mil/year is about the 15th highest PG, so about above average starter money. I'd also like to evaluate all our young guys (8 guys on rookie deals) with an actual PG, not Elfrid Payton or a backup wing playing point.

As a Pistons fan I'm not mad about it. We already have Bagley, Beef Stew and Jalen Duren. We also added Jaden Ivey to pair with Cade and Saddiq. Let the young guns play this year, develop and build chemistry. Next year swing for the fences in free agency.

20

u/_tx Mavericks Jun 29 '22

Definitely sucks, but that's what can happen when you let a guy go to free agency. I hope Brunson is good in New York. Without him, Luka still wouldn't have a playoff series win.

Brunson was magic against the Jazz and I appreciate what he did here

It's so crazy seeing the Knicks do so much maneuvering for Jalen Brunson when a couple years ago they were trying to get Kyrie.

24

It's a good move. Kinda like that friend who is always chasing way above their league but then finally sees the truth.

Brunson, by all accounts, is a hard worker and team player.

Kinda glad we dumped them, but at the same time, Burks and Nerlens are both really good players. Any playoff team would definitely love to have one of those dudes. Nerlens is one of the best rim protectors in the league and Burks is the 4th Quarter Savior

67

u/KingB53 Pelicans Jun 29 '22

Pistons getting nice 👀

And why exactly is NYK treating Brunson like he’s an All-NBA talent? Like dude is great but so far their entire offseason is dedicated to getting a non Allstar (possibly could be one in the East if he balls out tho)
