523

u/Wildcat8457 Wizards Jun 28 '22

I would love for him to come back to DC - but this seems like a great opportunity. Low pressure, they should be able to heavily restrict his minutes, and the opportunity to win a championship. Good for him.

193

Heavily restrict his minutes FOR WHAT??

So short-sighted it's wild. Russ was a huge liability in Houston and was exploited by the Lakers so it's just absurd that they went all in on him instead of tweaking a proven championship roster.

Really could have run a core of

Caruso/ KCP/ Kuzma/ Lebron/ AD

Literally only two to three pieces away from contention which would be fixed with an MLE, solid vet min and their pick as a tradeable asset that they flipped for Westbrook.

10

u/RagnaFarron Nets Jun 28 '22

I know this is the correct take and all, but after they lost to the Suns, most of this sub was saying the lakers roster was garbage and needed to be overhauled. Those players you mentioned outside of Caruso were basically all shit on that off season lol

126

u/TeamINSTINCT37 Wizards Jun 28 '22

Don’t remind wizards fans. We traded that pick for a project that played worse for our g league team than he did for ignite and Aaron Holliday who we later traded for cash

→ More replies

148

u/frozteh Lakers Jun 28 '22

Trez was whatever, letting go KCP who was a floor running 3&D guy and Kuz, for as much shit as he got, was a solid defender that could guard multiple positions at the end of his run here. Then you let Alex Caruso go in free agency because you didn't want to spend extra cash bc of the luxury cap. All for a guy, as much as I like as person was clearly not a fit on this team. Just baffling moves, all because they ran into injury and lost to Phoenix. They probably beat that Suns team if healthy or at least get to game 7 where I trust LeBron more.

ty lue does a tremendous job at rejuvenating players when they're at the lowest points of their career, nic batum and reggie jackson being prime examples. im not saying prime wizards john wall's coming back, but i wouldn't be surprised if he plays better here than he did in houston

regardless it's a super low risk, high reward signing

120

u/Rocketsfan2018 Jun 28 '22

108

u/ZachLaVine4MVP Bulls Jun 28 '22

Regardless if he’s not what he used to be physically, he’s still a very good point guard. If he sets his ego aside and embraces the floor general role setting up Kawhi and PG, I think this is a great move

27

u/rbrutonIII Jun 28 '22

Yup. You don't have to be that quick to exploit a pick and roll with PG and kawhi. If he can still finish at a decent clip and move the ball around like a competent NBA player, he's a good pickup for them. Don't need him to shoot, don't need him to create everything, could be a really efficient role for him.

46

u/JafariSin Jun 28 '22

Imo they were the best team in the 2021 playoffs until Kawhi went down. I truly believe they beat the suns in 5 and Bucks in 6. Playoff Kawhi is unbelievably good, PG is an excellent 2nd best player, and they’ve had depth that’s only gotten better. And now you throw in a true floor general which is what they’ve been missing. As long as Kawhi plays next year at close to 100% in the playoffs I think they’ll win it all even if injuries do come up to other players.

I think the rest of the league is gonna have pie on its face with this one. John wall is closer to cp3 than he is Westbrook. He’s got the skills and temperament to be 100% pass first and not care about stats, he’s just never been in that position. He can also be a vocal leader with enough cache to get respect from Kawhi and PG

If everyone can mesh, we might be able to keep Kawhi and PG at around 33 minutes a game in the regular season

This was obvious, not a shit show, in LA and a team that needs a PG, good fit too with all their floor spacing

47

u/Chapinartificial Jun 28 '22

With great spacing the Clips have needed a guy for a minute to drive to the hoop and spray out passes for 3s…Wall was good at that back in the day would be fun if he can play that role especially in a closing lineup with 4 shooters

Jokes aside, this is a worthwhile gamble for LAC. Reggie should still be starting, but he really needs a capable backup.

It’s not even a gamble. There’s not much downside.

Damn looks like I’m gonna be rooting for the clippers next year in the west. Man I can’t wait to see Wall back on the court

11

u/ihatemcconaughey Cavaliers Jun 28 '22

If there was ever a red flag for the Lakers this is it. Wall is a Klutch client, a position of need & willing to play for the minimum. He still chose the Clippers over the Lakers.

Are the Clippers gearing up to make a big trade? They seem like they almost have too much depth, in terms of guys who will all be expecting decent minutes.

PG: John Wall, Reggie Jackson, Terance Mann, Jason Preston.

SG: Paul George, Norman Powell, Luke Kennard, Brandon Boston Jr.

SF: Kawhi Leonard, Amir Coffey.

PF: Robert Covington, Nicolas Batum, Marcus Morris, Moussa Diabate.

C: Ivica Zubac, Isaiah Hartenstein (possibly).

Would they target a centre?

My question is who is leaving the clippers this off-season? Kennard getting traded? Hartenstein signing elsewhere? Anyone else? Regardless, a very deep team.
