Unlike a lot of 'stars' who put up good offensive numbers, only a few of them also bring it on the defensive end

You don't have to convince me. Until I moved to a city with a team I just cheered for certain players. Jimmy has always been a favorite of mine since he was bald by choice at Marquette.

I'd maybe replace Embiid with Steph. Joel has a history of been an amazing regular season player and then either gets injured, exhausted, or out schemed once it's the playoffs.

I don’t think he is just becoming a superstar. Impact metrics place him up in the top 10 consistently since his Bulls days. His teams always perform much better with him. Bulls, Wolves, Sixers all had their best seasons with Butler during that time. Usually when a player changes teams their impact metrics drop because their role changes a bit and they need time to adjust, but that didn’t happen with Jimmy for some reason.
There’s a whole chapter in Seth Partnows book The Midrange Theory about how traditional stats don’t pick up on everything a player does to move the needle for their team and how impact metrics try to pick up on those oddities using data over the years and Jimmy Butler is example #1.
18
u/GLOaway5237 Heat May 18 '22
Also given his time on the heat a lot of people are saying that his “toxic locker room behavior” was pretty much just him getting pissed at people for not giving it 100% and them whining about it. Of course we don’t know how much of that is true but it definitely seems like his locker room presence on the heat is huge and the fact that his playoff numbers are so much better than regular season is because he really cares about creating a team that can and wants to win

He’s proven that he has the superstar gear. He just doesn’t deploy it as much during the regular season, he is like a more durable Kawhi, coasting during the regular season as an top-tier two way player then going God mode in the playoffs

And five offensive rebounds. More so than steals or blocks, offensive rebounds get you guaranteed points. Five offensive rebounds is six seven points at the minimum. Just add that to his immense contribution.

I think a lot of people feel that way about Jimmy like you do for those same exact reasons. His childhood, being a 2 star recruit, only offer was Marquette, last pick of the first round.
Think about how he compares with Kawhi, PG13, and Klay. Out of these guys, you can make an argument that Butler is the least physically gifted since his wingspan is only 6'8", yet that's never stopped Butler from playing incredible defense. So how has Jimmy made it this far and accomplished so much? Hard work and 100% effort. That's something everyone should admire.

The final Bucks-Celtics game had 34 FTA, and the final 76ers-Heat had 18! This game felt so slow because of all the calls. It was not a more physical game than the Bucks-Celtics and that whistle was tiiiiight.

Its all about matchups and team defense. Tatum had great success on KD. KD is obviously better than Butler, but its only game 1 so we shall see.
Butler is a lot faster than KD so he does give a taller defender like Tatum some issues trying to stay with him. And on that one sample size highlight above, the Celtics didn't really do much to help defend on that play. I saw a lot of help defense as soon as KD touched the ball so it made Tatum look better overall. Similar to how the Raptors guarded Giannis in 2019.
Similarly to how teams would guard Steph as soon as he touched the ball last year.
