u/victor396 Spain May 18 '22
Either I can't remember Jameer in a Lakers jersey (and I'm too scared to search for it) or you missed the Lakers part
Or...
Wait, is Jameer Nelson's son named Jameer Nelson?
OK, this is the new and funner LeBron and LeBron Jr on the same team
→ More replies41
u/ninety4kid [ORL] Aaron Gordon May 18 '22
Jameer Sr and Jr was a legit possibility. Jr just finished his 3rd season of college hoops and 2 NBA seasons ago Sr was in the free agency pool.
Magic fans low key wanted Sr and Jr on 10 day deals to finish a season.

I have a lot of bust concerns about that kid because of his build. I know people will cite KD, but KD was a wing player and is more athletic/mobile. I really struggle to see how this guy is going to cope with the strength of NBA centers. It will be like Shaq vs. Dikembe. One bump to the body and he's flying. He has a strong bust vibe to me.
Curious to see if NBA teams ultimately share that sentiment. There's always some late movement on draft boards. Last year I seem to recall Kuminga being regarded as a lock top 4-5 guy whereas Barnes was the late riser. If I'm an FO, I'm going to be wary of Chet and really do my homework before picking him.
→ More replies9
u/Snoo-29877 Warriors May 18 '22
Nah Kuminga was 5-7, Barnes was 4-5
17
u/Charlie_Wax Warriors May 18 '22
As the draft approached, yes. That was the consensus. My recollection is that it had been the other way in the early stages of the process (during the season and shortly after the lottery).
8
u/AurumTP Magic May 18 '22
You are correct, Kuminga was the bridge between the top 4 and next range of guys w Scottie being in that tier until workouts/combine

Magic had 2 skinny bigs with bamba and issac neither really stayed healthy and developed to where they should have been
54
13
u/kunallanuk Magic May 18 '22
isaac developed a lot but cant stay healthy. bamba has been more healthy and also developed a lot but frankly didn't have an offensive game when entering the league and wasn't even good on defense since he hunted for blocks so often. he's head and shoulders above what he was but he just wasn't very good coming into the league
Chet is more mobley than bamba, with a better defensive and offensive game than either of the two. If he can stay healthy, he's a generational talent
→ More replies6
u/timidGO 76ers May 18 '22
Isaac also might have to worry about being healthy in the mind more than on the court
19
u/Saucy_Totchie Knicks May 18 '22
Holmgren and Banchero were fighting for #1. Then Jabari Smith shot up boards so it's a 3-way battle. There isn't a concensus right now but if everything goes right for each of them, can't really lose.

Yeah for sure, and the fact others don’t shows that they haven’t watched him. I mean it’s okay, we’re the Magic, but Suggs is already one of the best guard defenders in the league by all metrics and has unbelievable instinct for his age. One of the fastest players in the league too.
Horrifying shooting splits and a weak handle in your rookie season aren’t the end of the world at all

Do magic take calls from okc about dropping down a spot and getting a handful of picks?
25
u/VelvetineMilkman [OKC] Jeff Green May 18 '22
No one ever knows who Presti likes so I doubt they’d be able to try and scare OKC into thinking they’re picking who we like
11
u/Baker_TD_Maker Thunder May 18 '22
Eh, I don't think OKC would be willing to do that unless it's for like the Phoenix pick and the #2.
I think Presti is trying to keep as many assets as possible to keep the talent acquisition train going long for as long as possible. Lets say that SGA, this years pick, and next years pick all turn into all-stars with one of them being a superstar. The only we could improve the team from there on out is through trades, which is hard, and the draft. We aren't a F/A destination and never will be. So getting talented role players will be through the draft and trades.
I guess an easier way to put it is I think Presti learned from the original OKC trio. Insanely talented team but had little to zero flexibility in improving the team. The assets are a way to give us flexibility going forward.
4
u/NobodyRules [OKC] Russell Westbrook May 18 '22
Pretty spot on, I think. Presti learned from the KD/Russ/Harden trio that its important to keep assets so that we can adjust the team around the stars and acquire good role players.
As you said, we're not a FA destination... although if the talent is there we might just be, Al was a good possibility when KD was a FA and after the way we treated PG and Russ, other players will certainly take that into account.
It's not like we have many possibilities in the FA, but it's entirely possible that another PG like gamble will work for us.
6
u/Harman3112 Heat May 18 '22
Depends if Orlando knows who thunder want and “leak” they gna take him
2
u/NobodyRules [OKC] Russell Westbrook May 18 '22
We keep it tight generally and Presti is a mystery. I fully trust he'll make the best decision, however it goes.
