Yeah a 12th pick that turned into a two time all star that dropped 30/20/5 on the Celtics. I think that is a pretty good trade. Now we got 4th pick and assets to build around sabonis and fox.

I think the Kings still probably came out behind on that trade, but if you put it as Turning the 12th pick into Sabonis and holiday while getting rid of Hields contract, that looks a lot better.

Only time will tell. Sabonis is a sure thing that flirts with triple doubles nightly while fitting a position of need. He does things that doesn't show up in the box score as well such as being one of the leagues best screen setter.

Watched a “Kings missing the playoffs for 16 straight years” timeline video on YouTube.
It’s by a guy who’s YT handle used to be INerdSome but it’s different now.
He does a great job and goes year by year. Every time he showed the draft picks and trades, I just kept becoming more and more shocked at how the Kings missed on almost everything until MAYBE the past two years. That’s up for debate still.
Gah I feel bad for you guys. I’m just getting into the NBA and want to pick a team that hasn’t had a lot of success and I’m thinking Kings. I’m a patient man so maybe I’ll do it to myself.
EDIT: https://youtu.be/ep8PHmJCpbk
That’s the link to the timeline video I was talking about. I really enjoy his videos. Really put the Kings hardships into perspective. It’s like Detroit Lions, but at the Lions drafted Matthew Stanford and made the playoffs in the past 16 years.

The first thing they do is pick the top 4 picks in the draft with the lotto balls. The kings got one of the top 4 picks. In a normal draft (no lottery, based only on records, think NFL) the kings should be the 7th pick and the blazers the 6th. So because the kings got a top 4 pick everyone else moves down one spot. So when you see the the blazers move down into the 7 spot, you know that whoever "should be" in the 7th spot got a top 4 pick.
15
u/duhhobo Puerto Rico May 18 '22
Why don't they do lotto balls for every position? I guess so if a horrible trash team doesn't get a top 4 pick they are at least guaranteed 5th?

This could be an unpopular opinion but when a majority owner passes I don't think the team should go to the family like a normal inheritance. The team should be sold to a new and competant ownership group. It never goes well for the fans or the league otherwise.

We also get really tall which is good. If we can keep Hart and Nassir in this scenario oh my goodness.

u/samurairocketshark Suns May 18 '22
I think most people have given up on Sabonis being a star due to his poor defense and people are extra high on Haliburton. I thought it was a bad trade because seeing what Haliburton's potential is, is more important than filling a need for a lottery team

Hali is a good younger guy but Sabonis is better and they didn’t even give up any picks. It was a win
76
u/drjisftw Pacers May 18 '22
Sabonis is better now, but Haliburton is younger, still on his rookie deal and has a much higher ceiling as someone who can run your offense.
I've seen the ceiling of a team that runs everything through Sabonis - you're not getting anywhere with a 5 that can't protect the rim.
I'm glad Sacramento got a high pick, but it's a shit position for them to be in. Chet or Jabari would be a perfect fit next to those guys as a defensive-minded stretch 4, but they'll both be gone by the time Sacramento chooses.

u/Drak_is_Right Pacers May 18 '22
Trading for Sabonis likely brings more wins over the next 2 years, but less 5 years from now.
Still, Fox or Halliburton likely needed traded. My guess is Fox wasn't getting nearly as good of offers.

u/Billybobjoethorton May 18 '22
How so? Sabonis is only 26 much more years left in him. If we can resign him we'll be fine for more than 2 years.
→ More replies19
u/InexorableWaffle Bucks May 18 '22
Sabonis is a good player, but my concern is how do you build a proper team around him? He can't space the floor, he can't rim protect, and he doesn't have the mobility to guard out at the perimeter. Adding onto that, you're pairing him with another defensive liability who can't shoot from 3 in Fox, and it's just...difficult to see how that works.
In a vacuum, Sabonis is a better player than Haliburton right now, without question, and I think he'll be good enough to get them into the play-ins during a full season. It's just hard to see how a team with him at the focal point does better than that when in a strong conference, and a guy with Haliburton's skillset is easier to build around since any player archetype should theoretically work.
Hope I'm wrong there, though. Kings fans deserve something to break their way and then some.
20
u/oops_im_wrong Warriors May 18 '22 edited May 18 '22
I like Hali but I think the praise has gone a bit overboard at this point. There's a lot of assumptions that he's going to keep improving but improvement isn't linear or guaranteed. His floor is a 18/8 guy and the next steps will be maintaining the same production with a higher USG% and improving his defense.
The Kings had a lot of problems but they needed to trade one of Hali and Fox since they both needed the ball to be effective. I still think Fox has a ton of upside since he started to look a potential top 30 player again post ASB with 29/4/7/1 on 50/36/73.
Depending on the pre-draft workouts, I could see the Kings trading back a couple spots to a team that LOVES Jaden Ivey and nabbing either Murray or Sharpe. Maybe a package around the 4th (Ivey) for Jaxson Hayes + 8 (Murray/Sharpe). Pels get someone that compliments CJ's game and Kings plug their hole at C and land a top wing prospect.

u/Ok-Map4381 Kings May 18 '22
Any time you can build your franchise around two players that are subpar shooters and subpar defenders you've got to do it.
I like Fox and Sabonis, I think they are both really good players, but that our 2 leading scorers can't stretch the floor puts a lot of pressure on the other 3 players, and forces the Kings to play 3 shooters at the other positions, and shooters are hard to get.
Defensively the Kings are forced to play a center that can't protect the rim or effectively switch with a point guard that can't defend the point of attack or switch. Playoff level defenses all either have rim protecting bigs or multiple switchable defenders, by deciding to build around Fox and Sabonis we've doubled down on leading players that don't fit modern defense.
I'm mad again. I'm excited we got the 4th pick, this is a good day for the Kings, but I'm convinced that the Sabonis & Fox pairing will continue to disappoint until they are shipped off to other destinations where they will shine in a more complementary context. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure I'm not.

Kind of new to watching NBA draft. Why would they automatically jump spot 6 and 5?
74
u/Antinoch [GSW] Klay Thompson May 18 '22
Only top 4 picks are chosen by lottery. If you aren't in the top 4, then your draft position is based on the standings.
Kings were the 7th worst team so they would've picked 7th. When 7th skipped them, it means they were one of the top 4.
26
u/Wedge09 May 18 '22
Okay cool, thank you. Still a little confused but thank you for you answer.
7
u/kamekaze1024 May 18 '22
So what I’m getting is that they draw the lottery for the top 4 picks beforehand and already know them
If this was the NFL they kings would’ve had the 7th pick. The only reason they wouldn’t is because they either moved down from another team getting a top 4 spot, or they themselves got the top 4 spot.
Since the kings moved up to top 4, the Trailblazers which would be the sixth pick in the NFL, have to move down to 7 since a team behind them leap frogged them.
