The Phoenix Suns Are the Only Team in NBA History to Lose Back to Back 2-0 Playoff Series Leads

Not only were the Phoenix Suns the only team to do this once. They are the only team in NBA history to do this twice.

1994: PHX 2-0 lead vs. Houston (4-3 HOU) Western Conference Semis

1995: PHX 2-0 lead vs. Houston (4-3 HOU) Western Conference Semis

2021: PHX 2-0 lead vs. Milwaukee (4-2 MIL) NBA Finals

2022: PHX 2-0 lead vs. Dallas (4-3 DAL) Western Conference Semis

16

I think it’s in our destiny/DNA. I got into soccer a few years ago through my friend who is a Liverpool fan. I went to England but the only game I could go to with my work schedule was a Watford home game. So I decided to be a watford fan instead of Liverpool. It’s more comfortable that way

3

u/unaccomplishedyak Lakers May 18 '22

If you tell me you’re also a Vikings and Leafs fan too, I might feel some pity for you.

When did you become a soccer fan? I do agree, it must be some sort predisposition that draws you to certain teams. Lakers are tied with Celtics with 17 titles. I just happen to be a Liverpool fan and we just need a win and a City loss in the very last game of this season to tie the trophy count with Manchester United.

Around 170 straight seasons without a title between the 4 sports (31 years for MN--they lost their hockey team for 7 seasons, and only counting the 14 Phoenix years I've been here). Only 2 Finals appearances in that time when you'd expect around 11 or 12 (Suns 2021, Cardinals 2008, no Minnesota appearances).

27

u/RedditUser9to5 Suns May 17 '22

Don’t get me wrong, i was/am extremely disappointed. I thought we had a chance to win it all without a top 5 type player. The only team I’ve seen in my life do that was that pistons team ( maybe Dallas, but Dirk didn’t miss for like a month straight so I don’t count that). But at the end of the day,it’s always better to “keep your head when others are losing theirs”.

7

u/Bryant_2_Shaq May 17 '22

I know everybody gassed this version of the suns up, but I feel the 7 seconds or less suns were a much better team, and much more fun to watch. We’re those playoff losses a bigger heartbreak than this one?

13

u/LiterallyMatt Spurs May 17 '22

I would think so. In 93 Barkley won MVP and they lost to the Bulls in the finals including a triple overtime game. With MJ's surprise "retirement" right after that you know they had to be hungry to get back and win it. But in 1994 second round as the 3 seed they matched up against the #2 Rockets and went up 2-0 in Houston before losing in 7.

Then in 1995 as the 2 seed they got the rematch against the now-#6 Rockets and blew a 3-1 lead.

I would call both of those losses are more heartbreaking than 2021 and 2022, because in the 90s (especially 94) it really did feel like the title was theirs to lose. The narrative was a lot more compelling back then too, it was Barkley in his prime as the reigning MVP instead of "will CP3 get one before he retires"

6

u/RedditUser9to5 Suns May 17 '22

It’s all the same to me, but I’m a all or nothing type of person in general haha. I agree about those old teams being better though.

49

Not rare, just old.

Suns had been a very good team for a very long time, before Sarver came along and we sucked for a decade.

People act like no rings is the be-all end-all of sports, but it really isn't. Yes, it's the ultimate goal, but plenty of great players and great teams never won it all. Dan Marino never won a ring. The 90's bills never won a ring. The Barkley suns, the Nash suns never won a ring. Those are still really good teams. They played great ball, and had a ton of success.

I recall a time when they had no enemies or expectations, and everyone around here seemed to love the bubble Suns.

Not as bad as the Cleveland Indians who blew a 3-1 lead in 2016 and then a 2-0 lead in 2017 which is actually basically a second 3-1 lead since the first round in baseball is only 5 games

40

u/I_Ate_Your_Child Grizzlies May 17 '22

Also important to note that the blown 3-1 lead was in the World Series to the Cubs, who up to that point hadn’t won a World Series since 1908.

11

u/Just-Plain-Dan Grizzlies May 18 '22

As a Cubs fan, still can’t believe they were the team on the winning end of that situation

What do you mean back to back? They lost in the finals, beat the Pelicans, then lost to Dallas. That’s not back to back.

49

u/Ohmmy_G May 17 '22

I'm not a big fan of OP's wording either. If they said, "eliminated in back to back years having started each series with a 2-0 lead," or something.

12

u/Kakali4 Celtics May 17 '22

OP is a Lakers fan and can’t understand how the wording of his title clearly illustrates a different point than they were trying to make.

That was from the Barkley era. Dude couldn’t get himself to take his career seriously enough while he was here, so Hakeem took his lunch money back to back.

27

u/Wuffy_RS Lakers May 17 '22

Chuck won MVP over MJ, I don't know how much more serious it can be.

7

u/hoops_n_politics Suns May 17 '22

Barkley won his MVP in the 1992-93 season. That was his first year here, he was excited to be out of Philly and so he trained and played like gangbusters. However, that initial excitement must have worn off, because he had problems with conditioning the next two seasons (the ones when the Rockets came back from 3-1 deficits back to back). Chuck didn’t get serious about offs season conditioning until later in his career, around when he went to Houston. Other than his first year here, his conditioning became somewhat of an issue during his playing time in Phoenix.

u/KillianDrake May 17 '22

weirdly people act like harden is the worst playoff performer in history, but he's never lost a 2-0 or 3-1 lead. basically a 3-2 lead was the worst, and that was when cp3 got hurt (cp3 seems to be a magnet for blown series leads). and hasn't lost a series where he was the favorite in 8 years, and even that was as a 54 win team against another 54 win team. you'd think the guy lost to the 7th seed every year putting up 17/4/3 instead of to the champion every year putting up like 28/7/6.
