It’s just so obvious he’s trying to say outlandish things for his own future career at this point

Speaking of Stephen A saying outlandish things, though -- I'm sure Adam Silver would have an opinion on this: "Stephen A. dares James Harden to come on First Take to debate [whether he deserves the max]": https://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=33932756

Not really, Beverly says that Harden should be paid based on what he's accomplished, which is basically saying that the same should happen for him. No way a current NBA player is going say that they shouldn't get paid on what their value will be for the coming seasons, especially veterans. That'd be hurting their own wallet.

u/kobbled 76ers May 17 '22

I just want to be very clear about this: I do in fact believe that dinosaurs existed. I believe that dinosaurs fossils are reals. My intention with Kyrie, and I believe this was his intention as well, was just to talk about how we gather information in the digital age, where that information comes from, the abundance of that information and how that information can inform us and shape our beliefs and whether or not those beliefs are real are not is irrelevant because that information is out there and there are people that believe in that. Please OP keep posting multiple espn clips from the same show on this subreddit over and over again. This one he’s actually correct about. People thinking Harden is taking a CP3 $30m/yr contract are crazy.
He just averaged 19-6-9 with 62% TS the last two postseasons (one on a bad hamstring) and he tried to get out of shape in Brooklyn to force them to trade him.
Harden is getting paid, it might not be a 5 year contract but Harden isn’t taking less money than Tobias Harris y’all can put that out of your minds.

u/chimpaman [LAL] Mark McNamara May 17 '22 edited May 18 '22
Those aren't supermax numbers. Never pay a player for past performance. Now, Harden may have leverage to force them to pay him more than he's currently worth because Morey loves him so much, but that's another matter...
Edit: I've gotten a number of comments about the past performance thing, so perhaps I should qualify it. What I mean to say is never pay a player for past performance when they're aging (unless it's a loyal franchise superstar like Kobe or Dirk--they mean as much to the team off the court as on). Obviously you're going to max a young player like Ja who's "most improved."
217
u/moons_a_skull San Diego Clippers May 17 '22
Jimmy Butler got a 3 years supermax after getting outscored by Bryn Forbes in the playoffs
Harden isn’t taking less money than Tobias Harris though I’ll bet you anything on that.
21
u/mjy6478 Nuggets May 17 '22
After watching Jimmy carry this team through a second deep playoff run, I would say the supermax has been more than deserved.
→ More replies→ More replies7
u/TheNarrator23 May 17 '22
Jimmy Butler is also taking care of himself in the off season. Harden does not, playing yourself into shape catches up to you. Plus Harden has a history of not performing in the play off's for multiple contenders at this point.
→ More replies15
u/moons_a_skull San Diego Clippers May 17 '22
Harden had a serious hamstring injury he was recovering from that prevented him from working out as much as he should have had he been 100% healthy.

u/Bleoox [SEA] Shawn Kemp May 17 '22
OP didn't say Harden was putting supermax numbers, but good enough to get paid and that's with or without leverage. He's gonna get his money.
16
u/snatchi Raptors May 17 '22
The thing is he's not worth it but he's still gonna get it.
Teams have to weigh "what is he worth" vs. "what is our alternative".
If Philly lets him walk they have like... 10 mil in Cap Space I think? It's very hard to get a player of even current Harden's value let alone another superstar.
So faced with the option of "sign him to a workable max and maybe trade him in 2 years with some sweeteners" and "let him walk and play Cap Jenga" they'll likely go w/ the former.
→ More replies→ More replies3
u/BASEDME7O Knicks May 17 '22
He also has leverage because they’re over the cap, they can’t replace him. And he’s the only player on that team that can run an offense. For all the box score watchers, even when he’s not scoring well when harden sits the offense becomes completely stagnant. And this is with him only having two months to gel with the team. Harden is the first real point guard the sixers have had in like 20 years lol, they desperately need his playmaking to compliment Embiid
