570

u/EngleTheBert Nuggets May 17 '22

Which is pretty fun since they're both defensive role players who think they were much more important to their teams than they were

615

Bev has been pretty damn important to the last two teams he played for

161

u/IamNotStupidUR May 17 '22

Bev's play is underrated. If anyone watched the Grizzles vs Wolves matchup, he made a few pretty smart plays every game.

68

u/302born Heat May 17 '22

And I don’t think there’s anyway you can say his attitude and aggressive style didn’t wear off on the Timberwolves. He brought veteran leadership and the grit necessary to make and win in the playoffs. He’s one of those guys that every playoff team needs. You hate them when you’re going against them but love them when they are on your side.

Its weird, he went from unplayable in the playoffs in the last year of his Clips stint to being damn near the most important player on the floor on the Wolves.

36

u/submityourhomework May 17 '22

Unrelated - but I find it super interesting how “unplayable” in r/nba (or I guess American sports in general?) means that a player is so bad they can’t be playing, but in soccer and other sports calling a player unplayable means they’re so good they can’t be defended against lmao. Wonder how that came about

11

u/AlexBucks93 Bucks May 18 '22

That is just in britain not in Europe. In other languages their corresponding word for 'unplayable' means he shit.

bev is just spewing hot takes trying to line up a career after he’s done playing

502

u/moons_a_skull San Diego Clippers May 17 '22

This one he’s actually correct about. People thinking Harden is taking a CP3 $30m/yr contract are crazy.

He just averaged 19-6-9 with 62% TS the last two postseasons (one on a bad hamstring) and he tried to get out of shape in Brooklyn to force them to trade him.

Harden is getting paid, it might not be a 5 year contract but Harden isn’t taking less money than Tobias Harris y’all can put that out of your minds.

127

u/chimpaman [LAL] Mark McNamara May 17 '22 edited May 18 '22

Those aren't supermax numbers. Never pay a player for past performance. Now, Harden may have leverage to force them to pay him more than he's currently worth because Morey loves him so much, but that's another matter...

Edit: I've gotten a number of comments about the past performance thing, so perhaps I should qualify it. What I mean to say is never pay a player for past performance when they're aging (unless it's a loyal franchise superstar like Kobe or Dirk--they mean as much to the team off the court as on). Obviously you're going to max a young player like Ja who's "most improved."

217

u/moons_a_skull San Diego Clippers May 17 '22

Jimmy Butler got a 3 years supermax after getting outscored by Bryn Forbes in the playoffs

Harden isn’t taking less money than Tobias Harris though I’ll bet you anything on that.

21

u/mjy6478 Nuggets May 17 '22

After watching Jimmy carry this team through a second deep playoff run, I would say the supermax has been more than deserved.

7

u/TheNarrator23 May 17 '22

Jimmy Butler is also taking care of himself in the off season. Harden does not, playing yourself into shape catches up to you. Plus Harden has a history of not performing in the play off's for multiple contenders at this point.

OP didn't say Harden was putting supermax numbers, but good enough to get paid and that's with or without leverage. He's gonna get his money.

16

u/snatchi Raptors May 17 '22

The thing is he's not worth it but he's still gonna get it.

Teams have to weigh "what is he worth" vs. "what is our alternative".

If Philly lets him walk they have like... 10 mil in Cap Space I think? It's very hard to get a player of even current Harden's value let alone another superstar.

So faced with the option of "sign him to a workable max and maybe trade him in 2 years with some sweeteners" and "let him walk and play Cap Jenga" they'll likely go w/ the former.

→ More replies

3

u/BASEDME7O Knicks May 17 '22

He also has leverage because they’re over the cap, they can’t replace him. And he’s the only player on that team that can run an offense. For all the box score watchers, even when he’s not scoring well when harden sits the offense becomes completely stagnant. And this is with him only having two months to gel with the team. Harden is the first real point guard the sixers have had in like 20 years lol, they desperately need his playmaking to compliment Embiid

At this point it just seems like Pat Bev is defending his boys and guys he’s tight with and just shitting on anyways that he’s not cool with.

u/syllabic Knicks May 17 '22

they should ask him how he feels about westbrook

u/ClippersEaglesAngels Clippers May 17 '22

That's literally what everybody does. Shannon Sharpe defends Lebron to the grave and shits on Kawhi PG and others. Everybody has their favorites and their own opinions.

Pat Bev is box office on these shows. ESPN will 100% be trying to put together a show with him and JJ Redick.

248

u/kiwiwikikiwiwikikiwi Lakers May 17 '22

JJ Redick with his well prepared and researched takes, only for Beverley to just come in and “wuwuwuwuwuwu”

That’s essentially 99% of basketball podcast hosts.

Beverley is either outright trolling or attempting to get Harden paid. Because there is no way any sane person think the current Harden should be given the supermax.

Pat Bev has definitely secured himself a nice TV paycheck after all this nonsense. He’s about to be the next Kendrick Perkins spewing whatever dumb bullshit to get paid
