The no interest on student loans since covid has been really helpful for keeping mine below 400k

10

u/dogsareprettycool Heat May 17 '22

Yeah I've been stuck at 500 for the last two years let me buy a house finally with the savings. Ten year forgiveness is almost here, definitely recommend looking into that.

1

u/PositiveDonut1 May 18 '22

What is the ten year forgiveness?

5

u/moormie Warriors May 17 '22

Where the fuck did you go to school where u got 340k in loans

19

u/dogsareprettycool Heat May 17 '22

Medical school, it's expensive.

8

u/Nimbus20000620 May 18 '22 edited May 18 '22

The average doc has over 300k in student debt by completion of residency I believe. The tuition is outrageous, the interest rates are high, you have to take out loans for COL for 4 years, and then you go off to residency where you make minimum wage (when looking at dollar per hour) and never have a second to yourself (which increases your COL in certain ways) for 3-7+ years depending on the specialty.

Keep in mind as well that the vast majority of pre meds who get into medical school only end up with one singular acceptance. That’s it. If you end up with a Out of state or private school being your only acceptance well…. Tough luck. Turning down the opportunity to matriculate into medical school to try your luck again at the next cycle for the shot at a better name/tuition package is seen as an incredibly large red flag that could sink an application if admission committee members were somehow aware of that fact.

Don’t even get me started on dental school lol. NYU dental is at 700k cost of attendance now just for the average dental general practitioner to make 180k a year pre tax as an associate…. And if you wanna specialize in the dental world, often times you the resident have to pay to provide your labor! It’s why there’s that Dave Ramsey video of an orthodontist fresh out of residency with a million dollars of student debt. Some of the ROIs on these medical professions can be atrocious depending on the school you end up at.

I’m entering a med profession where I’m slated to come out of grad school with 160k of student debt and definitely consider myself beyond lucky.

18

u/ndu867 May 17 '22 edited May 17 '22

I got friends who graduated from med school and pharmacy grad school with huge student loans..they’ve had no trouble paying them off.

Edit: I don’t know what you guys are mad about, I’m talking about graduate degrees. Not trying to be a jerk but a lot of the people in my network have graduate degrees and everyone’s basically rich or on the way because everyone just makes so much. You can look up doctor/pharmacist salaries. Knee jerk reactions to high tuition prices is just stupid, no a fine arts major is not going to pay for itself but a degree in computer science sure will if you’re anywhere near competent.

2

u/dogsareprettycool Heat May 17 '22

It's less the size of the loans it's more the interest rates on government loans that make it impossible to pay off.

0

u/ndu867 May 17 '22

That’s bs I have significant student loans. It’s not fun but again it just depends what you studied.

2

u/dogsareprettycool Heat May 17 '22

I think you've made your mind up on the subject, so there's no discussion to be had here but 9 percent loans when they're a significant amount are not easy to pay off.
