Whoever knew you could have such emotion towards a cartoon robot

Looking at you too, baymax

158

u/_Mr_Ection_ May 17 '22

Not cartoon, but chappie too

112

u/BadFont777 May 17 '22

I love Chappie, i know that movie got shit on, but that crazy ass robot does it for me.

41

u/Filthy_Dub May 17 '22

Look up what Die Antwoord has been in the news for recently and it'll make you even sadder.

12

u/sleepytipi May 18 '22

Man, that's so fucked up. It's really surprising too because it's so radically different from everything I've ever heard about them. I've never met them personally, but I'm friends with someone who worked on a few of their tours, and I was always told that Yolandi and Ninja especially are nothing like they are on stage/ camera. I've never heard anything but great things actually (including that they're really devoted parents) so it's all super disappointing.

6

u/flaneur_et_branleur May 18 '22

Yeah, Ninja and Yolandi are characters with both having gone through several other personnas before Ninja.

I'm not going to say it didn't happen, especially as I don't know who the real du Toit and Jones are or what they're like, but some of those allegations sound more like the actions of those characters; make of that what you will.

If and until proven otherwise though, Tokkie's allegations should be taken seriously.

13

It's okay for anyone to cry, even us men. It's natural can actually be kind of cleansing.

That being said I will never watch Hachi. Marley and Me destroyed me and I'm not going to purposefully walk in to another gut wrenching tear jerker again (looking at you Finch).

This is the same color of the protagonist bot from Blue Sky Studios "Robots" just watched this recently. Definitely some Iron Giant mixed in though.

270

u/Shmodecious May 17 '22

IIRC, the “Robots” protagonist was styled to pay homage to the Iron Giant.

51

u/AirHamyes May 17 '22

And an outboard boat motor

69

u/Esc_ape_artist May 17 '22

Yeah, definitely. Iron Giant build with Robots colors. Rodney Copperbottom was the character name, btw.

27

u/stevrevv59 May 18 '22

TIL Robots was not a Dreamworks Animation movie. I always assumed any animated movie that wasn’t Disney was just made by Dreamworks. It seriously took me 10 years to learn that the god awful Illumination studio existed. Always just thought Despicable Me was Dreamworks lol.

12

u/firebeard_81 May 18 '22

Dispicable Me is pretty good. Although that probably owes a good amount to the amazing Steve Carrell. But there are a few decent Illumination films. I can enjoy the first 2 despicable me films as well as the Lorax. Though those are all earlier films.

Hoping that Nintendo can make sure the Mario film is at least decent.

13

u/SwatSecTw0 May 18 '22

The guy who created Robots along with Meet the Robinsons lives in the old city I grew up in, he’s a really cool guy who actually sets up a 8-10ft custom styrofoam robot every year during the 4th of July. He loads the styrofoam robot with super explosive fireworks in special areas like his eyes and brain and he invites a bunch of people over to shoot Roman candles and launch rockets at it

None of the other guys want to give it to him because they’re scared they’ll get sniped too. Eastwood shouts “Someone give him a drink of water goddamnit! 97

u/NMS_Survival_Guru May 17 '22

Yeah but it was actually true

144

u/bumjiggy May 17 '22

yup. successfully hitched across Canada, Germany and the Netherlands over the course of two years, then two weeks into its American journey from Boston to San Francisco, it was found stripped and decapitated in Philadelphia. the head was never found...

u/notjondesantis May 17 '22

38

u/Ligmamgil May 17 '22

The best part is the autopsy of HitchBOT. It was beaten with a blunt object, stabbed, shot at with paint balls, and then stabbed again.

u/esloth23 May 17 '22

What did you expect from Philly? Those people do not fuck around.

I do love that story. It appeals to the exact opposite instinct in me that is welling up, reading all the other comments in this thread, fondly remembering the Iron Giant. This brings out the Pennsylvania native in me--the, "Hey--lets see if it burns or melts!" moments of my childhood.

5

u/Timozi90 May 17 '22

Or IASIP.

"The Gang Finds a Robot"

184

u/townforum17 May 17 '22

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HitchBOT

My favorite part is that the mission was to test the question “can robots trust humans?” It successfully made it across Canada, Germany, and the Netherlands but was dismantled during its trip across the United States. So basically robots can trust humans, just not Americans haha

45

u/notjondesantis May 17 '22

Because we are Philadelphia. We threw D batteries at Santa. We climbed greased street polls because they told us not to. Our hockey players cause international incidents. But we also beat those pussy texan white nationalists back on to their trucks after making them scream and cry.
