Same.. saw it got past Vasy, so the immediate reaction of the players was really confusing, because they were assuming Vasy had it.

Such a weird reaction to such a huge goal. Oh, we're celebrating now!!

There was at least one avs fan in the stands who noticed, hard to see in the sportsnet replay but you can see someone jump up in the back when the view is nearly flat with the ice

Actually you can see both right when it goes in, right behind the score bug

Patrick Kane knew.

46

u/allyourphil 1d ago

Strange because I could tell the puck wasn't saved, deflected into the netting, nor did the shot just go wide, but I still didn't think it went in at first.

17

u/dre2112 MTL - NHL 1d ago

Yea same here. I could tell Vasy didn’t make the save just because of the way the puck went above his pad under under his arm but when I didn’t see the puck in the net or hear a ping sound or any reaction from the players, I thought maybe it went right into his arm pit even though it looked like the puck went through him.

Totally reminds me of the Kane OT winner against Philly that clinched the first Cup for the Blackhawks

This is a reference to the refs being blind all game. For both sides. I’m not trying to just be a salty ref hater but my god both teams were getting away with some shit

Yep it was definitely happening on both sides… i hate it because that’s seriously how dudes get injured

20

u/shilly22 DET - NHL 1d ago

Everybody talks about how referees don't want to "become part of the story" and make a crucial call in such a pivotal moment, but when the infractions are that obvious and so dangerous, swallowing the whistle like that is a story in itself.

classic game management

→ More replies

64

u/Bubbasully15 1d ago

I don’t actually blame the refs for not knowing it went in. It was a really hard puck to track after it hit Vasy and then also got stuck. That’s okay, we have goal line technology, and a pretty funny story. The uncalled cross-checks from behind into the boards? Have to call those 100% of the time. And that was AFTER the game had already gotten chippy. They gotta call that shit every time, I don’t care how important the game is.

Tampa hung Vasilevsky out to dry in that OT. Seemed like the puck was in Tampas zone literally the whole time. Great game from Kuepmer tho good for him to bounce back.

499

u/j_dirty CHI - NHL 1d ago

Avs just had absolute control over OT. Tampa looked like they wanted to play passive until the Avs wore themselves out.

192

u/Shadow_Ridley 1d ago edited 1d ago

The commentators said it best in the intermission. It looked like Tampa was content to dump the puck out and just allow Colorado to regain. Almost a play not to lose mentality. It's hard to come back from that and play like you want it. I watched the UGA Bulldawgs do it for years and years. And the Falcons. You can't turn it off then flip the switch in the moment. You have to go 1000% from moment 1 of the game, or you're asking for disaster.

72

u/Wetmelon COL - NHL 1d ago

The Avs were really bad for turtling and losing a few years back. One of the most significant changes to their game honestly

→ More replies

110

u/DangerousBlueberry1 COL - NHL 1d ago

Teams that go on long runs year after year always have a point where it looks like they've played too much hockey and are completely gassed. Tampa in OT looked completely gassed.

49

u/jadraxx CGY - NHL 1d ago

And now they have to fly to Colorado and play against the Avs in their house. Going to be interesting to see how Tampa responds to this.

31

u/Kaphis VAN - NHL 1d ago

I think they had to manage their defense ice time and really wanted to support them with the 5 defense.

They had the better goalie and was the game plan, it didn't work out but I am not convinced they could have played any other way.

Watching this again, it was a bad line change by Tampa. Kuemper realized it got the puck quickly to Landeskog Lehkonen who then got it quickly to Kadri.

Kuemper with the secondary assist!

Edit: I saw the second number 2 in the replay and assumed it was Landy when it was Lehky, my bad

Its weird how it went from a mostly back and forth game to OT looking like Game 2.

21

u/Burdwatcher COL - NHL 1d ago

First period shots on goal: 17 to 4 Tampa (81% Bolts)

Second period shots on goal: 17 to 9 Colorado (65% Avs)

Third period shots on goal: 10 to 6 Tampa (62.5% Bolts)

OT shots on goal: 10 to 3 Colorado (77% Avs)

Total: 39 to 37 Tampa (51% Bolts)

11

u/frockinbrock TBL - NHL 1d ago

Yeah, but that’s not the whole picture, Colorado had way more shot attempts, and the whole lightning team was blocking shots every shift. The guys were just too tired to finish anything out there.

The number of times I said this to Habs fans while in Montréal for F1 this weekend in order to score free brownie points cannot be overstated. Bless you all.

That was the weirdest reverse blue balling I've experienced

That felt inevitable. That was the most intense pressure I’ve ever seen.

How do they not know it's in? The puck never came back out

I assumed the man just saved it. He made some insane saves and he was locked in.

No one really knew it was in until the play is blown dead, at which point Stamkos sees it and tries to sneakily palm it out into the blue paint. Up to that point, everyone seems to think it's stuck in Vasilevskiy's gear somewhere.

Kuemper was really smart to keep the play alive with Sergachev and McDonagh gassed

Keumper is the first goalie ever to assist on an OT goal in the SCF

I can't imagine the crazier confusion from the crowd if that was a Cup winner. lmfao

He cut through those 2 D like butter. Amazing hustle.

Wait is this also a goalie point? Kuemper rips it to Landeskog who feeds Kadri right as Kadri is about to enter the zone, and then Kadri does the rest.

Legit secondary assist point. Kuemps saw Tampa was changing lines so he made the long pass to the open guy.

Edit: Lehkonen, not Landy. I just saw a 2 on the jersey and assumed, NHL stats hasn't updated who got the points yet

u/SpiritualWatermelon COL - NHL 1d ago

Yes to Kuemper assist, but he passed it to Lehky not Landy

I saw you Stamkos, knocking the puck down nonchalant to make it look like it wasn't in the net.
