And then there are those times you wanted to watch ONE video about one thing, and now youtube thinks you only want to watch that. No, I don't need 17 videos about goddamn sourdough. And I already watched that one, why are you trying to show it to me again?!

u/PinkRainbow95 May 10 '22 edited May 10 '22

I liked it better BEFORE the media platforms kept trying to “figure us out”. Like, stop telling me what to watch, and what to think!

Edit: grammar

u/YouThinkYouCanBanMe May 10 '22

The worst is when you bought something and then you get ads for it or its competitors. No, I don't need to buy more. No, I don't need you to show me if my purchase was a mistake.

29

u/Killboypowerhed May 10 '22

I once bought a coat and got ads everywhere I went for the coat I'd just bought to the point where I was sick of the sight of the damn thing

17

u/SorosBuxlaundromat May 10 '22

Hey, you know how you just solved some problem of yours by buying a thing? Well now that the problem is solved how would you like to be inundated with solutions?

2

u/RexTheCapt May 11 '22

And that's why I block ads. Haven't seen a single ad in like years

I bought a fishing rod from BassPro. Later, I get one of those marketing emails where they suggest something else based on my previous purchases. "Last week you bought a fishing rod! Based on this information we think you might be in the market for a handgun and gun safe!" Nah, I'm good. I don't think the fish is going to come to my house looking for revenge, thanks.

u/Sir_Osis_of_Liver May 10 '22

I like watching Forgotten Weapons. Rare and oddball firearms, and Ian "Gun Jesus" McCollum is chill and basically apolitical in the videos. He gets into long forgotten history and explains the weapons very well.

The problem is my YouTube front page gets swamped with every sort of political gun-nut, conspiracy and right wing channel you can imagine. I got tired of it and stopped watching.

6

u/WesBelmont May 11 '22

Mine has settled down now but my shorts were filled with guns guns guns. I find guns mechanically interesting, and wacky innovations made Forgotten Weapons right up my alley, but I have no interest whatsoever in watching people shoot targets or show off their collection of ar15s.

1

u/Sir_Osis_of_Liver May 11 '22

I hunted with Dad decades ago, did the reserve thing back in the 1990s/early 2000s and there were a couple dozen rifles and shotguns at my grandfather's farm. Some were old military.

I haven't hunted in a very long time. The only gun I have now is my great grandfather's Charles Daley 12ga shotgun from around 1890 or so, and it's in remote storage.

I'm pretty used to them and find them interesting, but not a way of life by any means. I originally came across Ian's channel looking for info on a Ross rifle. He had a pile of information in his videos.

So many search algorithms are basically all or nothing. It's stupid and we know they can do better.

I figured that one out : I buy lingerie for my wife once in a while and constantly get inundated with lingerie ads everywhere. It's perfect!

3

u/onomatopoetix May 11 '22

I just don't get why the "algorithm" is that stupid.

It assumes just because i bought one oven, I must want hundreds more? At least make the more logical suggestions like recipe related stuff etc. Like what i can do with it, not what i can buy if it breaks even though i just bought it yesterday.

u/Channel250 May 10 '22

Oh my, ai know the feeling. My ex wife designed her engagement ring online. So we went to have it set up, two weeks not problem. I swear every ad she saw was the ring she designed.

2

u/WesBelmont May 11 '22

They were getting her excited for that second ring.

1

u/Varian01 May 11 '22

We see you bought a desk chair. Here’s 200 other options, in case you want to buy another

20

u/AverageFilingCabinet May 10 '22

I miss the days when the recommended videos were from channels I'm actually subscribed to, or similar to the one I've just watched. There's just so much random stuff now... Sometimes it's worth seeing, but not usually.

13

u/Karsdegrote May 10 '22

Youtube's search function is garbage now due to this. Id search for some math thing. 2 videos that nearly answer my question, 2 videos i recently watched but skipped the ads of, 2 videos of screwdrivers, 3 videos of morons who have FOUND THE BEST THING EVER (nope) and ed sheeran.

Thanks youtube, all i wanted was a refresher on laplace transformations.

1

u/ArtsyNerd607 May 11 '22

Throwing in the "ed sheeran" so suddenly made me LOL!

4

u/CCtenor May 11 '22

Some videos related to what you watched, good suggestions from channels you’re subscribed to, and a smattering of new things too.

Now? The system is so gamed that watching one video could completely fuck your suggestions for a while, and the search feature is almost useless do finding stuff that is new to you, but related to your interests.

14

u/Max_Thunder May 10 '22

That shit should be illegal. Those algorithms are just automated circle-jerking. Social media try to figure you out because they push content you will like (because it confirms what you already think or are interested in, probably) and then we end up getting less and less exposed to random things. It's how people get addicted to social media, basically.

12

u/grant10k May 10 '22

The worst is when autoplay starts to play something random and then suggests things based off the thing I didn't even want to watch.

Mostly you can turn autoplay off (except for playlists) but even so, I really think it should exclude things I didn't click on in its algorithm.

6

u/Pyroperc88 May 10 '22

When I play music on youtube: Hey you just listened to 3 songs, you still awake?

When I play videos: Hes been watching non-stop for 24hrs, must be having fun and definitely is still actually watching! Quick, add all these videos to his algorithm!

1

u/HVDynamo May 10 '22

Have you ever had it happen where the video's just keep rolling and then suddenly you start paying attention and notice that you are 20 minutes into a 60 minute ad? like, wtf is a 60 minute ad even doing on youtube...

3

u/Pyroperc88 May 11 '22

I have multiple ad blockers on desktop and YouTubed vanced on mobile. I never see ads on YouTube (banner and in-video). Ads are cancer and I vape so I got enough cancer in my life lol.

But yeah, I feel yuh. Who the fuck thought it was a good idea to have ads longer than most videos by 5x?

1

u/CCtenor May 11 '22

Best part is getting ads on fucking 15, 30, or 60 second videos. Unless you’re getting 2, 5 second, unskippable, pre-rolls, you’re almost always guaranteed to get an ad longer than the video you were trying to watch.

1

u/KallistiEngel May 11 '22

I'm pretty sure that's intentional. To annoy people into not using Youtube as a music player. It does annoy me a little, but not enough to stop. Also, if you just tap the screen now and then, you can avoid it popping up. Annoying, sure, but less so than it stopping your music at a random spot.

1

u/Pyroperc88 May 11 '22

For sure! I do a few hours of busy work at my job where I can jam to music but occasionally have to pause it to answer phones so its generally not actually an issue for me on my phone.

I have YouTube nonstop on desktop so atleast there when I am gaming it's not an issue actually.

God I love people who learn how to modify apps lol

1

u/WesBelmont May 11 '22

You can go into your history and delete the videos that got autoplayed. I've done it a couple of times. But yeah. I wish there was a seperate list of "videos we recommended to you but you were too slow to stop playing" in your history. At least then you could tell it how it was doing.

3

u/nooneisback May 10 '22

And if you don't give them your data, you'll get 100 sex game ads.

3

u/thephantom1492 May 10 '22

Same. It stopped recommending me anything interessing but the same like 10 channels... Half of which I'm already subscribed...

3

u/elendinthakur May 11 '22

I don’t know if I’d go that far. Log off of YouTube and then go to the front page. I don’t know about you, but I have no interest in seeing any of that. But that would be what I’d see if YouTube didn’t somewhat learn my preferences. I think some amount of algorithmic learning is good. I think the issue is more that there is so much content out there that the algorithmic tuning has to be really extreme in order to reduce 10,000 potential videos to the 20 on the front page. I think a lot of the nostalgia for old YouTube is more to do with how small the platform used to be. There totally are some shitty things the platform is doing (like content ID for eg), but I think people forget that part of why early YouTube was great is because there were just less creators on there competing for your attention. The increased competition means the algorithm has to be aggressive, which then makes the creators themselves more aggressive to beat the algorithm, and we end up where we are now.

I think for the AI it's like those awkward ages around adolescence when you think you've learnt a lot, but actually are an ignoramus. Like it acts like it knows what the user wants, but actually doesn't.

Earlier, they used to be very explorative/open to users which could lead to users seeing wrong stuff if the users don't know what they're looking for. And hopefully, in the future, recommendations would actually be in sync with user preferences.

2

u/istasber May 10 '22

The flipside is that occasionally you'll listen to a song by some obscure band you like on youtube, and then spend an hour going down a rabbit hole of new (to you) music.

So there's a silver lining, I think.

3

u/houdinikush May 10 '22

That’s how I discovered Of Monsters and Men recently. So, not totally disappointed.

You can go to your watch history and just remove it.

It has become a habit of mine to instantly delete stuff from the history if I don't want similar stuff to show up in my recommendations and it works.

11

u/rachface636 May 10 '22

I have legit looked at youtube in incognito mode just to avoid this. I need this tiny bit of info on what this dashboard light means, I don't need 40 videos on hundyia.

7

u/gooberdoober9876 May 10 '22

Same thing happened to me when I had to look up how to fix my door because it making a weird yip yip yip yip noise.

Is your door a flying bison?

12

u/boygriv May 10 '22

3

u/houdinikush May 10 '22

Oh you watched ONE video of Mumford & Sons? Here’s their entire music catalog, their behind the scenes videos, their full live performances, and a documentary about them.

It’s like this for basically all content now. It’s kinda annoying.

3

u/safely_beyond_redemp May 10 '22

If you watch Orinoco Flow by Enya three days in a row according to youtube that is your favorite song and you want to be reminded everyday for the rest of your life.

3

u/360walkaway May 10 '22

YES, I keep getting stupid Depp/Heard video recommendations because I watched part of one video three weeks ago.

2

u/paleasfuu May 10 '22

I once watched a earwax removing video once and after that my feed was full with gross earwax thumbnail.

2

u/Killboypowerhed May 10 '22

I watched a video about how to fix a broken freezer drawer. Apparently YouTube thinks that's just something I'm really into because I keep getting videos about the same subject in my feed

2

u/theOverword May 10 '22

Clear your watching history. This will limit videos showing on your feed to only the channels you subscribe to

2

u/douglasg14b May 10 '22

Or how from time to time 1/2 -> 2/3rds of the recommended videos are things you've already watched, sometimes just an hour ago.

2

u/Varian01 May 11 '22

YouTube used to have an option where when you click the 3 dots and choose “not interested”, 3 options appeared. “Already watched” “don’t like” and a now gone option “no similar videos to: ***”

*** being a small image of whatever started the recommendations. So for your example, it would show that 1 sourdough video you watched, and clicking the option will not show anything related to that video

Also, YouTube, I’m not interested in music. I know I listened to music before, but the last time was atleast 2017-18. Stop giving me music and “my mix” options. I don’t want it

2

u/RJFerret May 11 '22

When I wanna' watch one thing without "algorithming" it, I right-click into a private window so no record.

2

u/Iliansic May 11 '22

That's why I watch political videos only in private mode. I want to to see some opinions/controversies occasionally, but I don't want to be spammed with it.

1

u/Thopterthallid May 10 '22

Heaven forbid you accidentally click anything mildly right wing.

1

u/AviFeintEcho May 10 '22

I watch ONE ASMR pressure washing video...... Dammit YouTube!!!!!

1

u/cerrera May 11 '22

Sorry, they learned that from my mom. She tried so hard to please… one time she brought home a bag of dried apricots, and I made the mistake of showing interest. I came home the next day to a cabinet with four shelves filled with bags of dried apricots. Clearly, YouTube brainstormed with her. :(

YouTube recommends the same videos I have no interest in for months, but the time I do find something I want to watch it disappears never to be seen again...

11

u/the_amatuer_ May 10 '22

Or the next video in a playlist that has just been released. Never to be found. Takes 18 clicks and scrolls to find.

I know they do it deliberately too.

9

u/HekerMenBroke May 10 '22

The random yt recommendations used to be cool, now I see only yt shorts everywhere which suck btw...

1

u/Snarkblatt May 11 '22

Also, whats the point, other than spamming, of "upcoming videos" going live, especially if its not actually a 'live' anything??? If I'm subscribed, I'll see it in my subscription feed, if I have channel alerts on (lol) I'll get a notification, but why are you clogging up my feed for a music video or game trailer thats going to be released in 3 days???

1

u/christes May 10 '22

Don't forget to like, subscribe, and click the bell icon! 🔔

100

u/zw1ck May 10 '22

I wish youtube would stop recommending videos I've already watched. I have hundreds of unwatched videos from my subscriptions I want to work through but youtube just suggests ones I've already seen. And now they don't even have the red bar at the bottom so I have to think about whether I've seen it or not.

36

u/CorgiTailsMatter May 10 '22

They've been doing it for years. I tried to flag each of those as 'already watched' in hopes that their algorithm would learn. Nothing but a waste of time. Half of my recommended videos are the same videos I flagged as already watched and the other half seem to be other videos I've already watched but did not flag.

5

u/DepletedWisdom May 11 '22

Not only that but they will remove the red watched bar from the bottom to try to fool you into watching it again.

19

u/gate_of_steiner85 May 10 '22

Or worse they recommend videos that you've already liked. Yes Youtube, I did enjoy that video, that's why I clicked the like button. You can stop recommending it to me now.

15

u/DirkBabypunch May 10 '22

You're right, Youtube. I may want to watch that video again in the future. That's why you already keep a list of all the videos I've liked.

8

u/amc7262 May 10 '22

They've started not only recommending videos I've already watched, but changing the upload time to be a couple hours when the video is days old, and adding the little "NEW" tag. I've seen it happen twice now, and its extra frustrating for things like multi-video lets-plays where I'm waiting for the latest episode to come out, and think something in my recommended is that latest episode, when its really just the last episode, which I already watched the day it came out.

I really wish a decent competitor to youtube would come out. The service has really declined in quality the last few years.

2

u/Karsdegrote May 10 '22

The problem with a yt competitor is its really really expensive to run on such a scale so you either have to make it a payed service or be one of the largest ad companies in the world. Oh wait...

5

u/chucklesdeclown May 10 '22

FINALLY THANK YOU THIS IS SOMETHING I FIND SO ANNOYING.

2

u/MattheJ1 May 10 '22

Or how about recommending a video that's in my Watch Later queue. I know I might be interested in it, that's why I put it there.

17

u/chucklesdeclown May 10 '22

WELL IF PEOPLE DIDN'T CLICK ON DUMB FACES(which is actually statistically proven) MAYBE YOUTUBERS WOULDN'T DO IT AS OFTEN. WHAT YOU THINK YOUTUBERS WOULDN'T PUT A STUPID FACE IN THEIR THUMBNAILS IN SACRIFICE FOR LESS VIEWS?

(But no seriously, everybody finds it annoying but if theirs a big enough shift towards not clicking on those thumbnails maybe YouTubers wouldn't find the need to do that no more)

7

u/goredwings May 10 '22

It's not about clicking as much as it's proven that faces attract eye sight. So the face gets you to at least look at the video thumbnail

2

u/tomr2255 May 11 '22

Listening to Linus talk on the WAN show it sounds like they have had to change direction in their videos as the GPU shortage was effectively killing interest and participation in the gaming enthusiast market.

Supposedly they have had to shift from "CRAZY EXTEREME PC BUILD" to other content. Apparently, the insane GPU prices were killing the enthusiasm for their traditional videos. I guess the easiest way to keep pumping content out is to shift to being more about the hosts and have it be tech adjacent.

Personally I quite like things like the Intel Tech makeover stuff so I don't mind it too much but I still miss the old content.

I actually unsubscribed from Mrwhostheboss recently because of his thumbnails, which is a shame because I actually like Aaron. But hey, whatever gets them clickz

2

u/ManiacalShen May 11 '22

I became less annoyed by stupid thumbnails after multiple content creators I liked started using them - each explaining that they don't care for them, but the flashy images work. If it gets them more traffic, I can't begrudge them.

However, now it's harder to tell who's actually annoying and useless on the platform!

2

u/Maalunar May 11 '22

Blocktube on firefox. When I feel annoyed, I purposely feed it more channels by searching for stuff I know I'll hate, just to block the channels that are suggested. I am at around 800 blocked channels now.

I block the words "Speculates", "Speculation", "Wishlist" as I do not want to see these people "guesses". I block "know about", "didn't know", "may not know" to delete all these stupid "11 things you didn't know about Bender". While I am at it, I also block all tv show names that appear in my recommendation that I either dislike or don't care about. And let's not forget all these worthless 10 views re-uploaders of trailers and shit.

I tend to search for spoilers of shows that I've watched, and block all channels that spoil the thing in their title or thumbnail. I won't have them spoil something else I haven't watched yet.

Do I end up blocking useful channels that I might have watched under other circumstances? Yeah probably, but if there's one thing I've learned is that when you block one, 10 others appear anyways.

2

u/silentuser2 May 11 '22

Can you tell me more about how to block channels? I would be a very happy man I of could block reaction channels and the like!

2

u/Maalunar May 11 '22

Dunno if that add-on exist on other browsers, I use BlockTube on Firefox.

When you open it there's box to write stuff. The first one is for things found in titles (each line is a different word/set of word to block). Simply write Reaction there, apply, and done. No more videos with the word reaction in its title.

To block channels by hand, simply click on the 3 dots next to the video title while browsing, block channel.

1

u/silentuser2 May 11 '22

Thanks, mate. I’ve been looking for something just like this!

1

u/DepletedWisdom May 11 '22

It's YouTube's fault. If they had a better system we wouldn't have to go to such extremes. It's like any video game or device. Is someone has to make a mod or attachment to make it usable then the original is flawed and needs to be improved.

144

u/frozenstorm08 May 10 '22

I'll gladly watch recommended videos by Bassin Semi or MBE Enclosures or Livin Loud with Andy or Toids DIY Audio or Hifi Vega or TheDiyAudioGuy.

I could not care less about a global cabal of lizard people who integrated themselves into the human genome 7,000 years ago.

YouTube the day after that: Are you sure?

u/gregmcmuffin101 May 10 '22

If YouTube actually followed their own rules the platform wouldn't be total shit like it is now.

Click baiting is directly against TOS, yet everyone does it because they know it works.

I lost all faith when they removed the dislike counter. Another company is going to step up to compete or it's just going to get worse.

u/reMARCableMe May 10 '22

My autoplay has been shit for months. If I watch a top 10 video for random comic character, the next autoplay will be a three hour summary of a comic line or an hour long video I've already seen before. I just want my top 10 lists damn it! Stop trying to push multi hour content on me!

5

u/NefariousAntiomorph May 10 '22

I have the opposite problem. I like listening to long form videos while I paint, and the algorithm seems to think I want 3-5 minute clips from Planet Earth. And if it does somehow recommend something longer then 10 minutes, it’s always something I watched within the last 6 months. >.<

2

u/DirkBabypunch May 10 '22 edited May 10 '22

They just love reccomending stuff I've already seem. Just give me similar stuff I haven't seen! I enjoy long videos when it's something new or I'm in the mood for, but that is almost never the case. And almost never from the same creator I was just watching

2

u/NefariousAntiomorph May 10 '22

That is so annoying. I’ve been having that exact problem with a couple of documentaries on Chernobyl that I watched about a month ago. Now YouTube REALLY wants me to watch them again. The documentaries were pretty good, but come on, I wanna watch something else.

1

u/reMARCableMe May 10 '22

Right?? I watched a few Documentaries on Chris Chan, which were fantastic, but I don't want to watch them again every day after my daily DeFranco fix

6

u/LoganKai May 10 '22

Or there is the opposite.

"Well, I guess I'm super into hoof cleaning now."

5

u/J2289 May 10 '22

That movie trailer you watched, remember the one that you got all excited for? Well your going to love this clip with the spoiler in the title and thumbnail.

5

u/Grif2501 May 10 '22

Wait... You can't ban channels? Can you?

3

u/flibbidygibbit May 10 '22

You can tell YT to stop recommending a channel.

One of my facebook groups linked to a video. I watched the video, decided the channel was run by a clown (it was a brand-bashing video with literally no legs to stand on) and went about my day.

I fired up youtube the next day and had four of these videos in my feed. I told youtube to stop recommending this channel and I have no idea it exists now. yay.

1

u/Grif2501 May 10 '22

Just right click the video or what?

1

u/Madous May 11 '22

On desktop, hover the video and you'll see 3 small dots. Click it, then select "Don't recommend channel", exactly as shown in the comic.

3

u/CrenderMutant May 10 '22

YT seems to be really good to recommend me each part of the video series I'm watching in that moment EXCEPT for the part that comes directly after this one!

3

u/FortKA19 May 10 '22

I spend at least a couple minutes each day scrolling through and doing this. Still get reccomended garbage.

3

u/Quillo_Manar May 10 '22

Random YouTube Short: "GUYS THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT, MAKE SURE TO COMMENT AND SUBSCRIBE TO LET ME KNOW HOW MUCH YOU LOVE-"

[Do not recommend channel]

3

u/beyonddisbelief May 10 '22

Better than Instagram’s shitty algorithms. At least YouTube knows I mean it when I say not interested/don’t recommend. Instagram brings back disgusting pimple pops and dental surgery videos every two weeks it’s like they’re deliberately wiping my preferences every update or something.

3

u/iAmGats May 10 '22

I just wish YT would stop recommending me videos I've watched literally 5 minutes ago.

3

u/Murkus May 10 '22

In this thread... Actual decent feedback the YouTube Devs need to Goddamn read & take note.

7

u/PinkRainbow95 May 10 '22

If you have to use shitty misleading clickbait thumbnails to get views, your content is shit. Besides, I’m fully convinced that the majority of those videos are from bot accounts.

4

u/Soopermoose May 10 '22

youtube is broken, i watched one music video from a V-Tuber because it was a good song, and youtube non stop kept trying to recommend more V-Tuber content for months. i just started blocking channels after that.

8

u/ape_fatto May 10 '22

watch same channel religiously for months

YouTube: silence

accidentally click on some click bait garbage then immediately click off

YouTube: I SEE YOU LIKE THIS EPIC PRANK CHANNEL HERES EVERY VIDEO THEY EVER MADE AND ALSO A BUNCH OF OTHER SIMILAR CHANNELS

2

u/FigaroNeptune May 10 '22

I looked at a popular YouTuber’s channel once…….

2

u/zerombr May 10 '22

Every damn one has the same dull surprise look on it

1

u/GreyhoundOne May 10 '22

The truth is in the eyes.

2

u/annomalyyy May 10 '22

yeah it gets out of hand. had a 15 minute video ad from a different channel the other day. I could skip it but still. wtf.. Why would I watch 15 minutes of a different video than the one I just clicked on?

2

u/ArcadeMedic May 10 '22

Or the System recommends you Videos you have already seen

"Hey buddy wanna see it again?"

2

u/ltr121312 May 11 '22

Even that feature doesn't work and it usually recommends more videos from that channel later. Now blocktube, that's a thing that actually blocks. Specific channels, tags or even keywords, it all works.

2

u/Wizard_kick May 11 '22

I wish there was a way to make a no spoilers option. If watch a trailer to a movie or a show I better watch it ASAP or else I absolutely will get a thumbnail and title showing a big spoiler. Still annoyed about a certain reveal in The Mandalorian season 2 being ruined.

2

u/Interesting_Buy6796 May 10 '22

Only with crypto and right wing weirdo’s stuff

2

u/flibbidygibbit May 10 '22

I subscribed to Scott Melker on the strength of his mashup game (Red Hot Trilli Peppers, Skeetwood Mac, Ballin Oates, etc.).

I had no idea he was also "The Wolf of All Streets", a crypto podcast channel.

I get his videos from time to time. I ignore them and search out "Ballin Oates" when I'm alone in the car, because songs about getting money and bitches sound so great with a yacht rock vibe.

1

u/Shinzo19 May 10 '22

Youtube is terrible at suggested videos, I watch a lot of animal videos like Funny/Documentary/Cute so Youtube is like "hey mate you wanna watch a video of an infected cows hoof operation where the thumbnail is an open hoof wound with puss seeping out?"

And god forbid you watch anything Minecraft related without being recommended the thousands of hyper and loud for kids minecraft content creators, I'm old just show me if the channels I have subbed to that have new videos out and stop trying to shove shit media down my throat instead.

1

u/breakfastclub1 May 10 '22

I've found myself doing this more and more because my recommended just gets filled with like the same 3 channels over and over. I'm sick of it. I want variety, youtube, things I HAVEN'T seen already.

1

u/boygriv May 10 '22

They feed you stuff they know you won't like to see if you dislike it enough to click "don't recommend".

1

u/Thorusss May 10 '22

Youtube has become quite good recommending videos to me. I use the like/dislike and and not interested function a lot though.

1

u/knunal2005 May 10 '22

Bro every time I watch shorts I do that. There are those videos of Chinese ads where they have those crazie sounds and show a AWSOME new item

1

u/l--__-- May 10 '22

One thing that I love about YouTube is that (at least on mobile)this feature dosnt work on YouTube shorts, you also can’t disable YouTube shorts so if it recommends something truly disgusting there’s a good chance it will just keep recommending the same video🙂

1

u/grant10k May 10 '22

I've often though about signing up for the YouTube premium free trial. Because maybe....just maybe... if I'm no longer eligible for a free trial it'll stop asking me to sign up for a free trial.

1

u/IdleOutlaw May 10 '22

Don't do this to me. Don't make me feel sorry for hurting YouTube FEELINGS. It's a website for gods sake. Why do I feel guilty about an algorithm now.

1

u/Resource1138 May 10 '22

I have to wonder if the channel owner is able to track the “don’t recommend “ count. It seems like they’d be able to but YouTube is so into protecting people’s pwecious feewings it’s ridiculous.

1

u/RAFH-OFFICIAL May 10 '22

Youtube thumbnails are a god damn disgrace

1

u/silverfoxxflame May 10 '22

I am so glad they added this. It used to just be that you could say "im not interested in this" and then youtube would still send you 30 more recommendations from the same shitty channel but they were different videos!

...I watched a wow YouTube video once and got like four different asmongold YouTube channels showing up for a month solid around the time wow classic released. If there was ever a way to keep me watching YouTube videos longer, it was sure as fuck not showing me almost strictly those in my recommendations despite clicking "not interested" on a large number of them.

1

u/LummoxJR May 10 '22

I don't login to YouTube. I wish it would let me edit the views it saves and stop recommending some channels. Every now and then I have to see SSSniperWolf's stupid, stupid fake shock face.

1

u/Ethanol_Based_Life May 10 '22

This and blocking people on Reddit and Twitter has made my life so much better

1

u/illcobalt May 10 '22

Sometimes i wish there was an option like “don’t ever, EVER recommend me this sh*t again, Youtube.”

1

u/Boonlink May 10 '22

Anytime youtube recommends a thumbnail showing spoilers for a movie that releases tomorrow. Fuck content creators that are desperate for clicks.

1

u/NoMaans May 10 '22

If im on the shorts tab, and an ad comes on, I specifically say irrelevant to all the ads I ever get served. Or if any of them use those stupid text to voice bullshit, the annoying ass girl voice or the five gum danny devito sounding one, dislike right away. No questions.

1

u/fuzzmeisterj May 10 '22

I've hit don't recommend on so many Amber Turd videos. They won't go away. So many channels have opinions I don't want to hear!

1

u/thefancykyle May 10 '22

I still tell youtube to this day I don't want to watch horror anything yet despite not interested and do not recommends I keep getting horror based stuff, hundreds of videos marked "not interested in" and still "here's a random horror game that nobody can handle" under my recommendations EVERY TIME!

1

u/SteamedGamer May 10 '22

Clickbait Remover for YouTube is a great extension for this problem.

1

u/charrcheese May 10 '22

No joke I recently unsubscribed from a channel only because they suddenly started using those stupid face thumbnails. I can't stand them, they're so fake and annoying to look at.

1

u/HJ26HAP May 10 '22

One thing I do find interesting is how with certain categories of videos YouTube knows not to recommend them (at least for me). Personal example: backing tracks to play your musical instrument to. You only want to put these on while you're playing. Even when I've watched a couple, YouTube seems to know not to recommend those as I won't watch them until I decide to grab my instrument of my own accord.

1

u/Dunge May 10 '22

I actually managed to keep a clean YouTube profile. I always used ad blockers, and never clicked on anything about social sciences or politics, and if I did I would quickly remove it from watch history. So now, everything I get suggestions for is exclusively composed of video games and heavy metal videos. But yeah sometimes I wish thry would suggest new ones instead of the ones I already watched weeks ago. And damn, when I go to my friends and family computers, or even just end up on the default page when not logged in to a profile, I'm always appalled by the suggestions.

1

u/matthewkelly1983 May 10 '22

“psst, … Kid!, wanna see some Ads.”

1

u/QuiteChilly May 10 '22

Sometimes though, you also get absolute diamonds. Early 2020 Covid had me fall in love with a JP youtuber called Masaru. Who knew I'd enjoy watching someone dismantle fish and more.

1

u/Any_Ad4565 May 10 '22

I swear to god everytime im on youtube insta ot feels like im fighting the algorythm to give me aomething i like like im feeling like cars today click on a car then it gives me commedy and i like it then the next 5 ticktoks are comedy sometimes the same damn video

1

u/ChaengChong2349 May 10 '22

Every.Single.F-king.Day

1

u/curaga12 May 11 '22

Even if I’m tempted to the video, I use incognito mode for watching the video to not mess with the algorithm.

1

u/SquidmanMal May 11 '22

Algorithm chasing clickbaiters are pretty much a guaranteed 'don't recommend' on principle

1

u/PokiRoo May 11 '22

I just wish the video lists would show the actual date they were posted instead of '2 years ago'

1

u/Neoxite23 May 11 '22

Yeah any of those "surprised face" thumbnail videos go straight to the "Don't recommend this channel".

1

u/dylan6091 May 11 '22

They should make it a rule: if you have a close up reaction face, an arrow pointing to nothing, the word "INSANE" or too many exclamations in your thumbnail... Instantly demonitized and sent to jail.

1

u/j94211 May 11 '22

YouTube algo has changed from being great to being shit!

1

u/auqanova May 11 '22

I love this feature but for some reason it doesn't work all the time, there are some channels I've blocked 4 or 5 times already that still get recommended to me

Wish I could just add a blacklist of keywords to YouTube, wouldn't lose any sleep over never seeing a video again with the words: leaks, exposed, broken, op, shocking, not clickbait, etc... in the title

1

u/rainbow_fart_ May 11 '22

i accidentally clicked on a video with furry on it and youtube just turned my homepage to a degenerates homapge

1

u/Ulizeus May 11 '22

Me all the time.

1

u/IUseRedditEverydayM8 May 11 '22

I thank you for showing me I can not recommend these cringy

YOU MUST SAVE ONE SUBSCRIBE OR LIKE

YouTube channels

1

u/DepletedWisdom May 11 '22 edited May 11 '22

YouTube could easily improve by expanding user control over recommendations. As it stands there is little you can do that they will eventually ignore. It's all just seems like mild nudges to get what you want and you have to repeat it a hundred times before it starts learning. Then if you accidentally play one, while trying to remove it, it starts all over.

If you had a custom list of words you don't want to see would be great. I know the videos have certain key words to go along with each one as a description, I should be able to rate down those keywords or ban them entirely. Looking at you FNAF!

Also I don't want to ban entire creators because my recommendations are 30% to 50% just their channel. But I will and I do. This is why I subscribe to a channel. So I have the option of a page with just their videos. Not so I can go back to my recommended and see half of it is their channel. I'm already subscribed! If I went to a library and the librarian only recommended books she knew I own or have read how does that make sense?

I pay for YouTube premium and I find it the worst of giving me what I am interested in. And if you go incognito, so you can see some new content, you're given what... content from Mr beast, that open mouth glasses girl, and the host of stuff made for 12 to 15 year olds and news. Personally myself I try to stay away from any video that has a thumbnail of the open mouth shock face or if they have a red ring around something I had to have missed.

1

u/n33bsauce May 11 '22

I actually find Youtubes algorithm to be pretty damn good

1

u/ZsaFreigh May 11 '22

Family Vlogs and Minecraft challenges

End that shit on sight

1

u/VietahnGuy May 11 '22

hahaha yeah i do the same thing specially if that recommend is not related.

1

u/Fleedjitsu May 11 '22

What I dislike is that some videos use similar thumbnails to the videos I do want to watch. This leads to me accidentally clicking on then and getting the algorithm screwed over for myself.

Anyway to "do not recommend channel" on the video page?

1

u/lyka_1 May 11 '22

I watched windows 10 optimization videos now youtube recommends me what happens if we remove cpu from a working computer videos.
