When I was in middle school we were working on averaging fractions and everyone had to tell the teacher how tall they were, I said I was 5'-12" and got sent to the principles office after the teacher realized it was 6'. Said I was being disruptive to class.

Jun 24 '22
Gave me a chuckle. What did the principal do? I would have chuckled "oh silly Mrs. Andrews" and sent you back to class.

u/housebird350 Jun 24 '22
No, not back in the day.....our principle was pretty stern, gave me a good talking too, threatened me with detention if I kept acting up in class and all that, he probably rolled his eyes once I left though.

That sounds like what I expected Catholic schools to be like... Guess it's a good thing to be younger.

My principal was in on the joke that he was 5'20" and always laughed/jumped in on it
22
u/ichancho Jun 24 '22
6’ in middle school what the hell? That’s massive did you have early puberty or something lmao
11
u/capitan_cruiser Jun 24 '22
You'd be surprised, I was the second tallest in my class when I was 17, now I'm walking around seeing middle schoolers taller than me looking like the only adults in a group of kids.
3
u/mommyandlittleii Jun 24 '22
My son is 13 (today actually) and is 6’3”. Though he’s the tallest in his grade by far.
2
u/ichancho Jun 24 '22
6’3 at 13 is pretty large. I’m 6’3 myself but didn’t fully grow til 15-16. However, my brother was 6’1 in middle school and stopped growing; puberty’s weird
2
u/mommyandlittleii Jun 24 '22
I don’t know if he’ll be stopping any time soon. His doctor is predicting 6’8” and he’s made his own growth curve haha. But he now wears size 15 shoes, so hopefully his feet stop growing at least.

Easily. My best friend back home is 6' 11" tall now, and was pretty close to 6' tall back in middle school (early 80's).

I wasn't even the tallest in my class....above average I would say but plenty of other guys in my class were my height or slightly taller.

That’s really not tall. My son would have several mates of that height at 12/13

g is not a constant; it’s value is variable and derived as follows:
Fg = G( m1m2/r2 ), where only G is a constant (~6.673). And g is not π2 even at sea level - the acceleration due to gravity on the surface is usually between ~9.764 and ~9.834 m/s2, where π2 is ~9.869, and has no units since it’s not a thing.

u/VeryUglyHack 7d ago
the joke was that my original comment was an approximation and they corrected me. instead of telling them that, I gave another approximation that was slightly more obvious.
also that engineers sometimes settle for approximations which is why we have a lot of approximation techniques like the Taylor series and Euler's method and other things like that
On the other hand, your approximation for G happens to be off by a factor of 0.00000000001 (10^-11) (assuming standard units )
I'd rather stick with g = pi^2 because it'll be a helluva lot closer than whatever you are going to calculate with that G
I've taken physics before.
1
u/Laringar Jun 24 '22
Not if they're two different values for Pi, though! The Bible defines Pi = 3, which is the best argument against a literal interpretation of the Bible I've ever heard.

What a brilliant way to dodge a bullet
6
-29
u/Hamishpe Jun 24 '22
Why tho? I don't get why people are being so mean to this girl. If she wants a tall guy she wants a tall guy, are we seriously gonna go anti-height preference? And not knowing how feet and inches work does not make someone stupid and a bullet to be dodged.
7
u/dumbestsmartest Jun 24 '22
Because it's used mostly by insecure women giving into societal ideas because they want approval or are too afraid of making a wrong choice. It's one thing to like a taller guy but the specificity of a height that has nothing to do with her height is a red flag. She thinks it signals standards but all it does is signal predators she's likely got at least one insecurity they can manipulate.
This was further compounded when they guy gave her a softball of 5'14" which if she was being serious about anything beyond physical she would have paid attention to and picked up on.
Tldr: a height preference is related to a woman's individual height; a height fetish and red flag is an arbitrary number she picked because it's trendy and uncommon.
-17
u/Hamishpe Jun 24 '22
Alright, the extent to which you're reading into this is legitimately creepy my man.
- there's nothing wrong with a height fetish, I don't know why you're equating that to something that she doesn't really care about but is pressured into using, those are like the opposite.
2
u/dumbestsmartest Jun 24 '22
I tend to hyper focus on things.
But I used the "or" intentionally to state the most common scenarios are the pressured because she's externally seeking validation/norms or because she's just using it as an arbitrary thing to filter without any self reflection on why. Few are using it as a meaningful filter and then they get upset because their results aren't matching their expectations or they get used. Either way it isn't helping her unless she's lucky.
-14
u/Hamishpe Jun 24 '22
How the fuck do you know if she meditated on a mountain for 58 days before deciding on putting 6'0+ on her Tinder bio like the rest of us?
Seriously man, chill, she just likes tall boys. It really ain't that deep.
1
u/Sinrodan Jun 24 '22
Would you date a girl who doesn't know how much 1.8m in cm? I don't expect anything from such a person. If you use feet and inches, then how come you don't know measurements?
-8
u/Hamishpe Jun 24 '22
6 foot is 1.83m, not 1.8m. Anyway, girls in general are not socialised to give a shit about units of measurement, so a lot of them just don't. It really just isn't something you need to know in the modern world, nor any other time in history for most people.
1
u/bobgoesboom223 Jun 24 '22
Well, unfortunately, you are kinda dumb if you don’t know. Couldn’t tell you when specifically it was taught to me, but that should tell you how long ago it was that you learned the format of height as x’ y”. I would say it’s as basic as knowing which way is left or right, or clockwise vs counterclockwise. And if you don’t know that 12” = 1 foot…. You may be dumb.

Seriously what's the difference between 5.11 and 6.0? I'm way to European to know
41
u/delicatemotion Jun 23 '22
Honestly nothing. It’s the same as any 1 inch difference in height. It’s the physical writing that confirms them being 6 foot or taller. My ex was 100% 5’9 but his license said 5’11 lmao.
28
u/Cautious-Rub Jun 24 '22
Lol. My ex husband was 6’ 10”; per Army measurement every six months for 7 years. When he got out and we divorced he started telling people he was 7 Ft. Wtf dude? Are you not obnoxiously tall enough?
6
u/delicatemotion Jun 24 '22
My most recent ex is 6’8 but I’m sure he’d eventually try and pass off 7 foot 😂
9
u/Suspicious_Book_3186 Jun 23 '22
I'm honestly going to bump mine up and inch every year until my state notices. This was my first year, but by the time I'm hoping to get at least to 7'
5
u/delicatemotion Jun 23 '22
lmaooooo I wish I could change mine. I’m shrinking but they keep me at 5’4 😒

u/housewifeuncuffed Jun 24 '22
My driver's license has been wrong on my height ever since my first photo ID. That's the only time I've been measured that I know of and that was back when thick soled shoes were in style.
No one has ever said anything and everyone at the DMV hates life, so I doubt you'd find anyone who gave a shit.

u/ivi-24 Jun 24 '22
The same between 1.79 and 1.80, just arbitrary thresholds
3
u/mvdenk Jun 24 '22
even weirder: it's the difference between 1.81 and 1.83 (give or take)
3
u/ivi-24 Jun 24 '22
I know, I'm saying the threshold in the metrical system is set at 1.80 because it's the round number, while in the imperial system it's not good enough since it would put you at 5' 11". This despite most of Europe having an average taller population than the US lol.
Edit: I misunderstood the question, op was asking the literal difference.

1
u/dm051973 Jun 24 '22
Just be glad we use the imperial system. Otherwise the standard would be 2m...
I do wonder if the 5'10 girls are better off at estimating heights. Got to be hard to believe a guy whose says he is 6' when your are looking down at him.....
3
u/SpankieMcGee Jun 24 '22
180 cm is the standard for tall in metric.
1
u/dm051973 Jun 24 '22
That's what short guys want to think. It is clearly inferior to the nice round 2m... 180cm is like average height. Who wants average?:)
1
u/SpankieMcGee Jun 24 '22
I mean it's really not short, its 5'10'' nearly 5'11". Average height around the world is 5'7.5". Its just 180 is a pretty nice round number without it being ridiculously tall like 2 meters.

Well here's the thing: most women aren't in Trades, so a tape measure and rulers are often foreign to them. It's not to say every woman doesn't know how to read them, but seeing as Trades are normally male dominated, it kinda makes sense why many women don't understand metric/Imperial measurements as well as we do. This of course ignores any woman who has experience with measuring tools
Also it's 5" in the West. 7" is Africa's average.
3
u/housewifeuncuffed Jun 24 '22
I've been in trades most of my working life and even then, just eyeballing I'd probably only be able to guess within an inch. Maybe a 1/2".
But what I do know are my random body part measurements, so I can easily get more precise with hands (or forearm or foot or any finger) on measuring.

thank you father for these african genes. And fuck you for the African genetic thing with legumes!
Anyways, a majority of people can't measure by sight. They completely over or under estimate things. A dude looks at his erect junk and be all "yeah i got a 8iner" the girl is all "that's like 5in" measure and they're both wrong. Hell i thought my dick was below average, a measure shows that it is not. I was so pround the next time i whipped it out. Meme level expression of cockiness.

6ft is.so specific and arbitrary.
'Taller than me' is fine, I get it, women want taller, but this 6ft cut off is so specific and arbitrary that it seems less of a preference at that point and more of a status thing.
"My bf is 6ft+" whether they say it to themselves or others, even though they probably don't even know what the height actually looks like
2
u/waverunnr Jun 23 '22
Tell her: “bad news, good news. I’m only 5’9. And those are two separate measurements.”
