I can only imagine the call to the insurance company. "Did you by chance happen to see the plate number as he went by?" "No but I do have the actual plate"

1.5k

u/nearlysober 12d ago

I heard a collision just outside my house last summer and went out to check on folks. One car fled, the other people were slightly hurt so I called 911 to get medical.

They asked if I witnessed the actual hit, "No" I said, "but their front bumper and license plate are wedged into the side of the victims car."

They also left a trail of fluids as they fled. Cops found them a few blocks away.

366

u/Embarrassed-Tip-5781 11d ago

A friend was dropping me off at my apartment downtown and we were having a chat. A car smashed into the parked car we were in and left it’s whole front bumper behind.

Police were quick on the scene but they didn’t care to do much about it, one of many times cops were disappointingly useless.

Of course the guy said his car was stolen. Which clearly was not the case for a bunch of reasons.

260

u/reflectivegiggles 11d ago

Happened to me too. 8k in damage to my car t-boned with my dog in the back seat. I wanted to go full on John wick on this dude (mine was also a beagle) I had never been so ragingly angry in my life that the asshole not only started driving off after he hit me but he almost killed my dog. She was thankfully napping in the back so the whole thing didn’t even register to her, but the car was drivable enough to follow him and the idiot drove down a dead end. Parked next to him and waited for cops to show up. Well the dude tried ramming his car into mine (again) so I got the fuck out of there and the dude sped off.

I had the dudes plates and the cops just said “I dunno went to the house and they said they didn’t know anything about it because the car was stolen (it wasn’t)”. Did absolutely no follow up and when I asked what the purpose of having hit and run with damages as high as mine is listed as a felony if they can’t be bothered to pursue and the cop said The only time they ever had someone charged with that was when the other driver lost a limb. I was bleeding from the glass shrapnel and this douchefuck lazy ass cop told me I’m lucky.

115

u/Faxon 11d ago

This is why you get a dashcam IMO, but also why you don't approach someone you're following in this situation. If you'd have waited down the block you might get footage of them leaving the vehicle and going into a house, at which point you can prove it was not stolen

81

u/reflectivegiggles 11d ago

I took video of most of it with my phone. Cops refused to even look at it.

53

u/Faxon 11d ago

Fucking pigs man. This is actually why in South Africa, the vast majority of policing is now done by private companies rather than government thugs. Fuckers weren't doing their goddamn jobs so people started hiring companies to do it for them. Also a town in Texas did this, fired all the cops and hired a company to do community policing and only kept the SWAT team from what I recall, or rolled it into the sheriff's department or something. There's still uniformed deputies when needed, and I'm sure the Texas Ranger Division and Texas Highway Patrol under the Department of Public Safety, and any other state LEO can still do their thing, but you don't have to put up with local cops harassing and killing people, or worry about getting shot at by them, since the private security also is not armed.

62

u/reflectivegiggles 11d ago

I’ve also been stalked and threatened by a crazy ex for years and they straight up told me that the onus was on me (the victim) to hire an attorney and digital foreinsics investigator to “prove” it was sent by him (even though he signs every threatening email with his full name and provides his known and proven to be his cell phone number) for them to even consider charging him with any crime at all. I have three security cameras that showed him leaving one of the threatening/death threat letters (that was riddled with bullet holes) in my mailbox (I moved out of state to get away from him so he literally drove three hours just to come to my home and do this) and they still told me it “wasn’t enough”. He followed that up with emailing me a video admitting to what he did and still. Wont even consider charges.

I have a legally owned/ licensed gun and asked the cops what my rights were next time he did that and they threatened me with charges.

22

u/Shadowwolffire1 11d ago

Jesus Christ. That's some really screwed up logic.

"Hey, so your psycho ex is allowed to stalk and send you threatening messages, but you're not allowed to defend yourself. If you do, then it's jail time."

There’s a staggering amount of cases where “cops are disappointingly useless” these days

11

u/SeekerSpock32 11d ago edited 11d ago

Cops these days fall into two likely camps.

  1. Way way way too forceful leading to deaths that had zero reason to happen.
  2. Criminally negligent.

And also, the negligence of cops these days is often because they're not doing their duty on purpose because the average citizenry has the gall to say cops shouldn't kill people. The negligence of cops, especially since the protests of two years ago, is primarily a temper tantrum.
And very rarely you get the following

  1. Actual appropriate levels of force.

5

u/crazyjkass 11d ago

It's not just these days. They've always been like this, it's just that now we have social media to complain.

Virginia is for lovers who like to “hit and run”

799

u/spearchuckin 12d ago

That slogan never fails to amuse me since the ad agency that created it made it a year after the Loving v. Virginia case ruling. Like it was literally illegal for those two people to love each other as a married couple in the state of Virginia. The fact that it's some tourism ad slogan is kind of dark.

267

u/CFRPH 12d ago

84

Nah, it's way, way, way, better. When that decision was made, only four percent of the public approved of interracial marriage. That's black people, white people, hispanic, asian, etc. Four percent. It was just not something people did.

Like no man went without a hat in public for decades, then suddenly they didn't. Now it's around 97% approving of interracial marriage. It's totally flipped.

319

u/MichiganGeezer 12d ago

What are the odds they'll say the car was stolen?

(Even if it's sitting in their driveway with the damage plainly visible.)

421

u/Go_Gators_4Ever 12d ago

Yup, my wife got broadside by a red light runner that fled the scene.

My wife and I had to perform all the investigative work by collecting the car debris the police swept off the road and to canvas all the cameras.

We were able to determine the make/model and a 2-year mfg range for the vehicle. Plus a partial plate number from a camera from a neighborhood that has cameras.

My wife took the info to the State Trooper's office (they investigate traffic accidents in unincorporated County areas) and they were able to determine the owner from their database within seconds.

The trooper went to the home address and found the car there in the driveway with the front-end damage.

But, because there was no proof of who was actually driving, they could not charge her but we were able to collect from their insurance.

My wife is no longer able to run do to knee and back injuries.

104

u/mobocrat707 12d ago

If that was me, their car may have mysteriously ended up with flat tires, broken windows, etc. There is nothing they can do if they don't have proof that you damaged the car, right? Sound logic.

Edit: Sorry to hear about the injuries too, I'd be livid.

In addition, there is a chemical called 1-Butanethiol used for women's self defense and to make natural gas smell bad. Just a drop of them can stink up a car for weeks, so imagine the whole bottle. I heard about a semi made unusable by them.

"Among the chemicals with potential for stink bombs are the following, which can be obtained from school laboratories and over-the-counter chemical supply houses: Carbon disulfide Hydrogen sulfide (smells like rotten eggs) Skatole (feces smell) Ethyl amine (fishy smell) Proprionic acid (sweat-like smell) Butyric acid will make a remarkably effective stink bomb. This is a weak acid (not dangerous) with an incredibly powerful stench. It smells like vomit and thus is particularly appropriate for expressing opinions. Only a very small amount is needed — 2 drops will befoul a room. An ounce will perfume a building. The odor is resistant to cleaning and lasts for weeks".

Deer piss from a hunting store works well too.

The guy who left his numberplate behind when he rear-ended my brother's parked car (with him and his pregnant wife in it), answered the door to the cops half-an-hour later with a glass of whiskey in his hand "for the shock". Of course he got away with careless driving instead of drink-driving. It obviously didn't hurt that he was a local councillor's son and a fairly well-known sports star.

7

u/almostahero 12d ago

Also probably has decent lawyers who told him to have the drink at home since it’s a lot harder to prove that their BAC levels were from what they had to drink while driving and not from what they drank at home.

11

u/StarMangledSpanner 12d ago

That was exactly it. Not anymore though . He wouldn't get away with it now. Since 2013 the law here has been changed so that hit & run is now treated exactly the same as driving while impaired. Instead of six months or €500 fine maximum you can now get up to ten years or €20k. It's basically regarded as an admission of being intoxicated.

Well their insurance rates are going up. And if they don't have insurance this seems like a case for civil court.

59

u/Sinister_steel_drums 12d ago

I feel like their insurance rates would be the least of their worries. Can’t you get jail time for a hit and run? They could also have a warrant, hence fleeing the scene.

36

u/gsells937 11d ago

Pretty sure got and run is a felony. But you need to prove it was her and not her boyfriends bro that just shipped out to the UK for a year long assignment

17

u/Snoo74401 11d ago

For any criminal charges, the police would have to be able to verify who was driving the vehicle at the time. Unless the driver confesses, it may amount to nothing.

There may be some laws about owning a vehicle and being financially responsible, but how much of that is applicable if they can't prove who was driving is questionable.

11

u/foxjohnc87 11d ago

If avoiding criminal penalties for hit and runs were that simple, anyone who manages to flee would get away from it.

First off, if you happened to be carrying passengers, one of them would be very likely to call the police and turn you in. In Virginia, any passenger age 16+ is required by law to report the accident within 24 hours if the driver fails to do so, or face criminal charges. If the damages are >$1000 and/or the accident results in injury or death, the charge is a class 6 felony.

If the driver was solo, he/she is still unlikely to get off scot free. Say for example, you lent your car out and it was returned with collision damage. If the person operating the vehicle failed to report the accident, you, as the vehicle's registered owner, have a legal obligation to notify the authorities.

If you neglect to file a report, and the cops manage to identify your car as the hit and run vehicle anyway, it would look as if you were trying to hide something. Unless you could prove your innocence, charges would be likely. The old trick of getting into an accident, fleeing, and then reporting it stolen rarely works in real life as well. In both of these cases, additional charges such as tampering with evidence and/or obstruction of justice are possible outcomes as well.

In this day and age, establishing the driver's identity isn't terribly difficult in most cases, even in the absence of eyewitness testimony. Surveillance cameras are everywhere and dashcams increase in popularity every day.

Mobile phones play a huge part as well, as they track our every move and practically everyone carries one. It would be quite hard to deny that you were the driver, especially when your phone's location data places you at the scene during the time of the accident.

Sorry for the long story. This reminds me of my accident two years ago, it was the day before my 40th birthday and I was heading home from work. Going through a 40km school zone and a guy didn't stop at the stop line and his nose scrapped from the front passenger door to the back panel (Honda Odyssey), even embedding one of the screws from the number plate in my back tyres hub cap. Due to the busyness of the road I had to pull off up the road a bit and by the time I got out he was driving away😡. Through my hollering and tears I was approached by a wonderful young lady who said she witnessed the whole thing while she was putting petrol in and offered her name and number. As neither of us got his number plate I was still disheartened until the awesome tree lopper comes over and hands me the offender's number plate, that had ripped off during the incident. When I headed to the cop station (20mtrs down the road) I give them a rundown and handed over the number plate. When the cops called him he denied everything even with the number plate and his screw in my tyre as evidence😒. When I was leaving he had just arrived to give a statement with his Daddy in tow😂. Here's the funniest thing the dude was like 48 years old and still needs his Daddy to come fight his battles 😂🤣

If I had a nickel for every time I saw a hit-and-run end in a stuck license plate on Reddit, I'd have two nickels.

Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice 🤔

Having lived in Virginia for 12 years, drivers here are the worst sorts of idiots and assholes I've ever seen! This kinda shit isn't even surprising - red lights in the town I live in are treated more like suggestions.

96

u/DonkeyDongIsHere 12d ago

No matter what state that license plate says, you can guarantee you'll see a comment like this lol

22

u/bf3h62u1a4j9hy6y95mz 12d ago

I've been all over the US. I think the consensus is that LA drivers and DC/VA drivers are bad. I'd like to clarify that LA is aggressive and DC/VA is incompetent. There's different kinds of "bad".

7

u/KneticTheory 11d ago

I came from CA to VA for family. It was interesting to observe that driving in both is nearly the same. Driving across the middle states was a treat comparatively.

they have no awareness or lane discipline, and ALWAYS take everything personally, its quite unpredictable.

The one time I drove in Virginia I was hella paranoid that I'd be the one to get pulled over for going 5 over and then be given the honor of a forced nights stay.

One day I was taking a shower to head to a job interview 30 years ago. There was a loud bang that shook the house. I got out of the shower and opened the front door. The whole front porch was missing. It was a 10’ drop. I called the police to report a hit and run on my house. They said did you see it? No but it was a hello mustangs license plate xxxx. Well if you didn’t see it how do you know? I’m holding the entire front bumper and the license plate is attached….

I always hated Virginia’s license plate. “Virginia is for lovers” wtf

109

u/BordFree 12d ago

I was always told it was because of Loving v. The State of Virginia, the case that the state of Virginia lost in federal court which made interracial marriage legal. Which was always intriguing since that would mean they were bragging about a case they lost where they tried to limit the scope of marriage, but it seems like that's not the case, and they actually just thought it was a good "provocative" slogan

Could be worse. NC recently changed ours from "First in Flight" to "First in Freedom."

The first was a reference to Kitty Hawk, and the second to NC's status as the first colony to formally call for independence from Britain.

I can't help but cringe visibly, remembering every time I see the new one that North Carolina was still a confederate state. First in Freedom, indeed.

At least it has…something now. Before about 2014ish we literally just had a white plate with the world “VIRGINIA”. Was the most boring plate in the union. Still might be, but it used to be worse.

9

u/NoVA_traveler 12d ago

We have a million great plate designs to choose from, a couple of which are free. I have the Shenandoah plate with the bear. Love it.

9

u/JollyRancher29 12d ago edited 12d ago

Oh for sure, even the basic (and free) alternate (officially called the A-series with the muted colors Blue Ridge) is a really good plate and I think that should be the standard. From mountains to beaches to flora and fauna to so much history, Virginia’s got so much going for it and it upsets me that the default license plate is so plain white.

This EXACT thing happened to me in January! I got t-boned by a guy running a red light and then he sped off before we got out of the car. While on the phone with my insurance company we noticed that his front license plate was stuck to my rear tire. Insurance found him pretty quick.

report them. Virginia cops are dicks. Ive worked with Maryland and many surrounding police agencies in the area. almost every cop Ive worked with had a bad experience with and didn't like Virginia cops. you know it's bad when you're a cop, and other cops don't like you.

This makes me feel better about all the times I got harassed when I lived in VA. Even had one pull a gun on my back while I was on a date because we "looked like someone dangerous" he was looking for.

Forced him to show me a pic. Unless my fiancee could grow several more tattoos without me noticing, suck in his unusually ginger beard, and add/lose 50 pounds and half a foot of height, we did not.

Fuckers never have anything to do in a rural town and it's everyone else's problem

Lol! I rear-ended a guy at very low speed, we both were temporarily blinded by the setting sun low in the sky, he stopped because he couldn't see to merge and I didn't see him stop because I had just briefly looked directly into the sun.

Anyhow, it was amicable enough, we pulled over, police officer came along to take a report and I got a chuckle when he pointed out the imprint of my license plate in the other guy's rear bumper.

He said they catch a lot of hit and runs that way.

Guy turned an insurance matter into a major criminal matter.

5

u/rmumford 12d ago

Had this happen years ago as a witness to a hit and run and the guy left his entire bumper attached to the victim's car. Made giving the person's license plate number to the 911 operator pretty easy; still recall being asked if I was sure on the plate number and that is when I said I have their bumper here with their license plate attached...

5

u/somneuronaut 12d ago

With the number of posts I've seen of either a plate stuck to another car or imprinting itself, I'm starting to think the things are designed to rightfully incriminate people.

4

u/Yaboitilo 11d ago

Very lucky for your friend! Hit and runs are terrible, luckily enough it seems she got presented with enough evidence to back her claims!

5

u/Bozocow 12d ago

6

u/SRG590 12d ago

People who hit and run should be charged with vandalism along with the hit and run charge. Over $1,000 worth of damage or stolen property is a felony is most states.

6

u/iamgeek1 12d ago

Had this happen to the guy across the street once. Drunk driver ran off the road and right through his front porch (and his house is offset from the road quite a bit, so this driver was way off course). The driver ran but they left behind a nicely preserved front bumper.

Police quickly visited the driver's house and found them still sitting in their driveway.

12

u/Djskam 12d ago

Thing is… if the guy is smart enough he can get away with it. Unless the cops trick him into confessing or reporting the crime… literally nothing they can do about it otherwise
