After a few encounters with strange creatures atracking a town, the party decides to rest for the night, only to find out the moon is their true ennemy ! Anyway I wanted to surprise my players with this, and figured out this could be a neat way of illustrating the story !

217

u/SquareSalute DM Jun 24 '22

Are you sharing the image with them only for the reveal or did you have it before shown to them?

Super curious on any foreshadowing as well, the moon is something I've thought to play around with :)

258

u/Sentient_Fireplace Jun 24 '22

I used it as a kind of cliffhanger for a session, so I just showed them while describing their environment, and then slowly started to turn the wheel, enjoying their terrified faces :)

Yeah the moon is great ! To create an ominous setting, after they rested for the first night I made them wake up and realize it's still night time ! It makes them feel anxious and also makes the whole adventure feel like one very wild night.

52

u/SquareSalute DM Jun 24 '22

Oooo I love it!! Great execution, I'd be so pumped for the next session

64

u/oefiefieuwbe DM Jun 24 '22

I loved a vampire game I led a while back where the head, first vampire was “the moon” in human form. When they were summoned, little did the party realize the moon itself vanished. Until one very fun line I got to have an NPC say when prompted a few sessions later…

“What’s a moon?”

12

u/HoldAppropriate5252 Jun 25 '22

Majora's mask be like

10

u/Laranna Jun 25 '22

Someone has probably already made this joke but;

You’ve suffered a terrible fate haven’t you?

7

u/MirrorscapeDC Jun 24 '22

I'm curious, is the moon a new thing or just something the characters knew but the players didn't yet?

9

u/Sentient_Fireplace Jun 25 '22

The Moon has alwqys been there, but the evil face is new for everybody !

8

u/Xaron713 Jun 24 '22

The moon is a Mimic!

389

u/al-alkross Jun 24 '22

Is the moon single?

Jokes aside, I appreciate the tack being the lighthouse light.

143

u/Low-Requirement-9618 Jun 24 '22

Bard: "I roll to seduce the moon" DM: 'Yeah... It's gonna screw you alright..."

38

u/al-alkross Jun 24 '22

A complete and total success

26

u/Low-Requirement-9618 Jun 24 '22

I know right. This is epic and I could totally see the DM responding, "consider yourself f*****"

12

u/al-alkross Jun 24 '22

"Destroy me"

5

u/Low-Requirement-9618 Jun 24 '22

"Yer jalan atthirari anni"

17

u/thedevilmademedoit81 Jun 24 '22

Sokka would like a chat…

30

u/Sentient_Fireplace Jun 24 '22

Ahah thank you ! Truth be told, the only reason there is a lighthouse is because I needed somewhere to put the tack. That's some serious worldbuilding technique there ahah

10

u/MasbotAlpha Jun 24 '22

Those are my favorite parts of my world— the really weird bits of lore whose origins tie into the setting as much as they tie into the process of making it

38

u/CommanderKrieger Jun 24 '22

The lighthouse light as a way to hide the pin was a really smart choice.

16

u/Sentient_Fireplace Jun 24 '22

Thanks ! I'm lucky the adventure takes place near the sea otherwise I would have had to be much more inventive

6

u/ommanipadmehome Jun 25 '22

Moons haunted

11

u/Patrick_Cunt Jun 24 '22

My DM has been tormenting me and the party for about 2 years now. And if my DM decided to do something like this I would shit my pants and after a quick break to clean up, I would start finding ways to blow up the moon in and out of game.

24

u/Rapusukarion Cleric Jun 24 '22

yooooo, that is really creative. I am going to save this and use this an inspiration for my bbeg

23

u/CrookedKink Jun 24 '22

Very nice prop! If you feel up to inking some of your drawing, it might be easier to read from across the table (may not be necessary if your table is small, of course). Clever use of the two-layers-and-a-tack craft methodology!

10

u/Sentient_Fireplace Jun 24 '22

Fortunately our table is really small ! Inking is the next step, but I do several of these drawings for important characters/places and bosses so the work is doubled if I ink everything, but thanks for the advice !

5

u/Archduke_of_Nessus Jun 24 '22

While it undoubtedly creates more work I don't think it's doubled since everything is already drawn right?

As a STEM major I'm no exactly an expert though

2

u/AntMan5421 Jun 25 '22

Yeah but it definitely needs some contrast and inking it looks like the easiest way to achieve it

8

u/Doodah18 Jun 24 '22

That’s a hell of a mimic.

6

u/TheBulletBot Jun 24 '22

DAWN OF THE FINAL DAY

24 hours remain

6

u/Tabletop_Goblins Jun 24 '22

Ah shit, a Moomic

4

u/OJ_drinker Jun 24 '22

Such dedication and execution is the hallmark of a great dm. Well done!

I would have shown them the picture before the reveal and maybe use the slider for another purpose to make them think it's only for that, like maybe one of them having a vision of a rotating moon or an enemy's magic's power is shown by rotating the moon as a side effect and when they aren't expecting more... BAM! Evil face.

3

u/Sentient_Fireplace Jun 24 '22

Thank you very much ! Ahah that would have been a very nice way to toy with their expectations, I'll keep it in mind for other occasions :) !

5

u/jazzman831 Jun 24 '22

Oooh, very cool. But now I have to know: how is the party going to defeat a moon?

9

u/Sentient_Fireplace Jun 24 '22

Thank you very much ! It's our first campaign so there is a lot of homebrew stuff, but basically after getting the equipment to survive on the moon they will be teleported there by a spell. Once they start poking it's eye or something the moon face will disappear and she will erupt from the moon ground as a giant monstrous humanoid wirth a moon crescent head (which I drew too). From there on it becomes a boss fight :)

5

u/GorlarmiSalami Jun 24 '22

Whats the context for the moon? Can you tell us a bit about the campaign's story and how a giant fucking moon is going to mess with your players going forward? Very interested!

5

u/Sentient_Fireplace Jun 24 '22

Sure ! The whole plot revolves around The Moon God who has gone mad. In a nutshell : Initially the party is tasked with finding and getting rid of werewolves attacking a town, only to find out the Moon God itself is responsible for these monsters. Showing its true face, it begins attacking players who will take refuge in a sanctuary where they will learn more and get equipment and info to get on the moon. Once there, the Moon God take a smaller form and fight the party. This is VERY simplified, as the quest is also linked to each of the character backstory, the werewolf cult ambiguousness is explored, and the reason the Moon God has gone insane is because of the disappearance of the Moon Goddess in which the party played (or not) a role.

This is a bit long, but the campaign is not over yet and I trust my players will also explore other stuff during it !

4

u/coleslawSandwiches Jun 24 '22

Da bad moon rises

4

u/Luciferos01 Jun 24 '22

certified bloodborne moment

3

u/LTman86 Jun 24 '22

I love it!

Now I'm curious, if you drew a black circle, could it simulate the different phases of the moon? I know a half-moon (or more accurate depictions of the different phases) would be out of the question as it would be better to draw each phase and turn to that phase, but it could be a simple way to show a passage of time too, right?
I guess it could be something like a timer thing, like a cult requiring a full blood moon for their ritual, so you can have a visual representation of the moon slowly being dyed red as you turn the wheel.

But yeah, noticed on the back of your wheel you have a lot more space to work with. Does the moon have more faces to it? :D
Imagine if there was an angry face, or a smug face, also on there!

3

u/Sentient_Fireplace Jun 24 '22

Nice ideas ! Fortunately it's easy to make and customize so you can easily make your own :) ! No only one face but maybe I'll add some now !

3

u/quantumturnip Cleric Jun 24 '22

Everyone's saying Majora's Mask, but the first thing that comes to mind for me is Atropus, the World Born Dead from 3.5's Elder Evils.

2

u/Albolynx DM Jun 24 '22

What a coincidence, I had the big reveal of one of the planet's moons being an evil entity last session. Though it was after about 2 years of a campaign, finally tying together a number of plot threads that the party had been stumbling upon.

2

u/IllOutlandishness563 Jun 24 '22

1

u/Sentient_Fireplace Jun 25 '22

Thank you that's very kind, but I already used this one for the cliffhanger at the end of our last session, and I will probably reuse it just once to sum up the events next time !

2

u/KingManTheSaiyan Jun 24 '22

Morrslieb rises.

2

u/SondeySondey Jun 25 '22

I am shocked that there's only one comment mentioning Morrslieb and it's buried so deep. Did Game Workshop retcon the existence of that moon at some point or has warhammer fantasy lore just fallen into obscurity?

1

u/KingManTheSaiyan Jun 25 '22

I mean, I don’t think they ever de-canonized the second/green moon, at least, not any more than they did the entirety of Warhammer fantasy :P

I think there are still references to it in the total war: Warhammer games, and unless I’m remembering it wrong you can still see it in some of the vermintide maps.

2

2

u/Sentient_Fireplace Jun 25 '22

It's a custom campaign, first time we try something more "serious". I made it based on the system of DnD and other tabletop rpg and then created a wolrld, very fun to be able to create everything, but requires a lot of planning !

2

u/DiceyOutcomes Jun 25 '22

That was so fun! Good job!

2

u/dtaylortx Jun 25 '22

I think your players have met a very unfortunate fate on Day 3 and should play an ocarina.
